Because of you, our students got to experience hatching chicks right in our classroom, and it was and will be as exciting as you'd imagine.\r\n\r\nWe used the materials to set up an incubator and created a 21-day countdown on our wall. Each day, a student marks it off, and if a chick hatches, they get to add that to their tally as well. It turned into something the whole class looked forward to during our morning meetings.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the materials, they were instantly excited and wanted to start the project right away. We opened everything together, and they got to see, touch, and figure out what each item was and how it worked before we even began.\r\n\r\nI was on maternity leave during the project, but my EA and long-term sub carried it forward. We did have one chick hatch! She needed a little extra care having gotten a wry neck, but we were able to treat her, and she's doing well now. My husband did pick up the incubator and the chick on day 18, and we sent updates to the kids on how she is doing. It ended up being a really meaningful lesson in care. I get back from my leave this week and will be bringing in our hatched chicken for the kids to be reintroduced.\r\n\r\nWhen I'm back in the classroom, I'm excited to see everything the students did and hear about their experience. Our next step is to incubate more eggs, and this time, my students will help teach me (since I was gone) and a pre-K class what they learned going through the process. It's a great way for them to reflect and take ownership of their learning.\r\n\r\nThank you again for making this possible.
