What makes this project so special is that we are using pickleball to bring together science, math, language arts, and social studies in meaningful and engaging ways.\r\n\r\nOur students were thrilled when they first saw the pickleball equipment and learned that they would actually be using it as part of their classroom lessons! Their excitement and curiosity immediately created opportunities for learning. One of our favorite activities has been becoming \"Pickleball Scientists,\" where students investigated how force and direction affect the movement of a pickleball. Working in small groups, students used paddles and balls to conduct experiments, measure distances, record observations, and analyze their results. They quickly discovered that learning about force and motion is much more exciting when they can experience it firsthand!\r\n\r\nThe equipment has also helped us make connections across subjects. Students have explored the history of pickleball, practiced reading informational texts, developed scientific vocabulary, and used their writing skills to make claims supported by evidence. In math, students are applying measurement, data collection, and problem-solving skills to real-world situations involving the sport.\r\n\r\nOur next steps are just as exciting! Students will continue developing their pickleball skills while investigating how accuracy, force, and direction work together. They will also use their mathematical knowledge to explore court dimensions, scoring, and statistics. As our unit progresses, students will have opportunities to collaborate, practice good sportsmanship, and participate in pickleball challenges that bring their learning together.\r\n\r\nPerhaps the most rewarding part of this project has been watching students recognize that learning doesn't have to happen only at a desk or in a textbook. Through movement, teamwork, discovery, and problem-solving, they are building academic skills while gaining confidence and creating lasting memories.\r\n\r\nThank you for helping us bring Pickleball Academy to life! Your generosity has provided more than just sporting equipment. You have given our students opportunities to learn through experiences, discover new interests, and see how the skills they develop in the classroom connect to the world around them. We are incredibly grateful for your support and the difference you have made in our students' learning!","fullyFundedDate":1784229462536,"projectUrl":"project/serving-up-fitness-confidence-and-char/10358803/","projectTitle":"Serving Up Fitness, Confidence, and Character Through Pickleball","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Placencio","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9892596_orig.jpg?crop=761,761,x0,y184&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1786129904049","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9892596"},{"teacherId":8413193,"projectId":10001994,"letterContent":"Because of your generosity, our Pre-K classroom now has special book buddy plushies that have made reading time even more exciting and meaningful for my students. These cuddly companions help create a welcoming and comfortable environment where children feel encouraged to participate, share their ideas, and develop a love for stories. Our book buddies help students practice important early literacy skills such as listening, answering questions, making connections, learning new vocabulary , and retelling stories.\r\nIn our classroom, reading is a time for imagination, connection, and building confidence. Students enjoy choosing a book buddy to sit with during read-alouds, independent exploration, and partner sharing. The plushies provide comfort and encouragement, especially for students who may feel shy or hesitant to participate. They help children feel like they have a special friend beside them while they explore new stories and ideas.\r\nMy students have loved caring for and reading with their book buddies. These little friends have helped bring excitement and joy to our literacy activities while encouraging students to become more engaged and confident learners. Thanks to your generosity, books are now a central and exciting part of our day. In our classroom these books are doing much more than telling stories—they are helping children build foundational skills that will support them for years to come. Through these new texts, students are learning early literacy skills such as recognizing letters and sounds, building vocabulary, understanding story structure, and learning how to listen and talk about stories. The books also introduce important social-emotional lessons, like identifying feelings, problem-solving, kindness, and empathy. Many of the stories help children see themselves reflected in the characters, which builds confidence and connection.\r\n\r\nWe read together during whole group time, in small groups, and independently during center time. Students ask questions, make predictions, point to pictures, and retell stories in their own words. Many children choose to revisit the same book again and again, proudly \"reading\" it to a friend or stuffed animal. Books have become a source of comfort, excitement, and curiosity. Because of you, reading in our classroom feels meaningful, accessible, and joyful. Your support has helped create a love of books that will stay with my students long after Pre-K. Your kindness has made a truly meaningful difference in my Pre-K 3 classroom, and I am so grateful that you chose to invest in the learning and development of my students. Because of your contribution, our science center has transformed into a place filled with curiosity, excitement, and hands-on discovery.\r\n\r\nBefore your donation, my young learners were limited in the ways they could explore science concepts. As three-year-olds, they learn best when they can touch, experiment, observe, and ask questions in their own natural way. Thanks to the materials you funded, they now have opportunities to explore real tools and real experiments that spark their imagination. Items such as magnifying glasses, sensory materials, sorting trays, discovery bottles, life cycle models, and early STEM manipulatives have allowed them to participate in age-appropriate investigations that help build early skills in observation, prediction, problem-solving, and communication.\r\n\r\nEvery day, I see the impact of your generosity. My students gather around the science table eager to explore what's new. They proudly point out small details they would have never noticed before — the patterns on a leaf, the bubbles forming in a water experiment, the way magnets attract and repel. They have started using \"science words\" like float, sink, sticky, observe, and compare. These moments may seem small, but to young children, they represent big steps in learning how the world works.\r\n\r\nYour donations have also helped create a safe, organized, and inviting environment where my students feel confident enough to try new things. Because everything is hands-on and accessible for their age, they are able to work independently, collaborate with peers, and share discoveries with excitement. This has strengthened not only their science skills but also their communication, social development, and creativity.\r\n\r\nI wish you could see their faces when they walk into the science center each morning. Their eyes light up with curiosity as they explore the tools that you helped provide. They love having a space where they can be little scientists, free to test ideas, observe changes, and learn through play. Your support has made all of this possible, and I want you to know that you have touched the lives of my students in such a positive and meaningful way.\r\n\r\nThank you for believing in early childhood education and for believing in the power of curiosity. Your generosity has created real learning experiences for children who are just beginning their educational journey. We appreciate you more than words can express.
