As an early career teacher in a Title I public high school, I have seen the transformative effect of providing access to food over the course of the school day. Whether it be an endurance-testing 9th period lab or an intense tutoring session after school, nothing puts a smile on my students' faces quite like the sight of snacks to tide them over. \r\n\r\nI teach around 100 students this year, and I regularly mentor several more as the faculty advisor of our school's Science Club and Poets' Society. I can attest to the difference that even a small snack such as a packet of chips, popcorn, or an energy bar can improve the mood and mental health of my students. Having snacks around helped students persist through difficult lessons or long days. Small bites of good quality food helped fuel their creativity and thinking. My AP students swore by the power of food to help them think more critically to solve tricky problems. Finally, having the opportunity to eat with their peers while working on their passion as part of the after-school club activities helped students make friends and develop strong social bonds. I felt honored that I was able to facilitate that experience with your support. \r\n\r\nFor several students who may come from homes where both parents work or whose families are experiencing food insecurity, having access to snacks beyond the standard school lunch can be a lifeline. It helps students feel safe and cared for. I am so grateful that I was able to provide that warm and supportive environment for ALL my students due to the gift of food. In an era where students' attention is being preyed upon by Big Tech, it is truly a gift to have access to hands-on learning opportunities that are as fun as they are educational. Your gift has positively impacted the lives of 70 sophomore physics students at Technology High School, Newark, NJ. \r\n\r\nIn my grant, I requested several roller-coaster building kits along with other demonstrators (an easy catapult building kit and a Newton's Second Law demonstrator) in order to make physics more relevant, fun, and challenging for the students. As months passed, I had completely lost hope of my project getting funded. Imagine my surprise when I received an email informing me that the roller coaster kits were on the way! The kindness and warmth of strangers and organizations that believed in me and my students really touched my heart. More than me, my students were delighted and immediately excited when they saw the kits. Physics can be kind of a dry subject especially for students who may not be inclined towards mathematics. So, to see them overjoyed was very moving. \r\n\r\nWith the kits, my students had the opportunity to learn about the Law of Conservation of Energy in a real life context - by constructing, testing out, and analyzing data from roller coasters of their own design, students were able to use their knowledge of mechanical energy transformations and conservation to make predictions and develop explanations. We used the mini-catapult kit to create a hands-on learning opportunity for elementary school students during our annual STEM night, which hopefully instilled a sense of curiosity in them. \r\n\r\nGoing forward, I plan to develop a project-based learning (PBL) unit for teaching energy that is centered on the roller coaster building project. This will give me more opportunities to build the kits into my lesson and unit planning, rather than use them in one or two activities through the year. Thank you so much for giving me this opportunity to both create authentic learning opportunities for my students as well as grow in my skills and practice as a physics teacher.
