Before receiving the robes, our students were excited about singing, but they had never experienced the sense of unity that comes from looking like a true ensemble. When I first showed them the robes, many of the students were a bit tentative and unsure about wearing a uniform. However, the moment they tried them on during a rehearsal, their excitement quickly grew. Suddenly, they weren't just individual students in a class—they were a choir.\r\n\r\nThe robes created an immediate sense of pride, uniformity, and professionalism. Students stood taller, sang with more confidence, and began to take even greater ownership of their performance. That confidence was on full display when our choir had the opportunity to perform for the district principals at a principals' meeting. The students not only sounded wonderful, but they also looked polished and unified as a group. The principals were extremely impressed with both their musical performance and their professional appearance.\r\n\r\nYour generosity gave our students more than just performance attire—it gave them a sense of belonging and pride in their ensemble. Seeing themselves as part of a unified choir helped them feel confident, supported, and excited to share their music with others. Thank you for helping create such a meaningful and memorable experience for our young musicians.","fullyFundedDate":1765562473671,"projectUrl":"project/let-our-voices-shine-choir-robes-for-ou/9877122/","projectTitle":"Let Our Voices Shine: Choir Robes for Our Choir","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Kramer","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10174049_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1763739992500","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10174049"},{"teacherId":9714285,"projectId":9850424,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generosity the students of Hawthorne Ave School were able to grace the stage in costume, looking uniformed. One standout moment was a 6th–8th grade guitar project where students used the materials to learn instrument care! The older students are taking the lead in making sure guitars are stored properly and safely. \r\n\r\nWe are learning basic chord shapes and the students are collaborating in small groups to arrange short pop songs. By the end of the unit, each group will perform their arrangement for the class, explain their musical choices, and reflect on what they'd improve next time. \r\n\r\nWatching students who had never touched a guitar confidently perform—and coach each other using shared vocabulary—was a clear sign that the resources deepened both their skills and their ownership of the learning.\r\n\r\nWhen my students first saw the materials, they were beyond excited! There was an immediate buzz in the room—students couldn't wait to hold the instruments, ask questions, and start playing. That excitement quickly turned into focus and motivation as they realized these were their tools to learn, create, and grow with.\r\n\r\nRight now, we're building strong foundational skills, including proper playing technique, basic chords, rhythm, and ensemble habits. The next step is putting those skills into action by forming more advanced guitar ensembles. Students will collaborate, rehearse together, and work toward performing as a group, with the goal of sharing their music in spring performances. Next year I expect we will send a group of students to our district All City Music performance where students will get to perform with other students in the district for the public. It's been incredible to watch their confidence grow as they move from first notes to making music together, and we're so excited for what's ahead.","fullyFundedDate":1760693636165,"projectUrl":"project/help-our-guitars-stay-safe-and-ready-to/9585279/","projectTitle":"Help Our Guitars Stay Safe and Ready to Play!","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Kramer","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10174049_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1763739992500","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10174049"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_47731","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":439,"numTeachers":28,"percentFrplEligible":73,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":82,"percentWhite":0,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":15,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":0,"gradesServed":"Pre-K - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"15.7:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":64.0,"schoolId":47731,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Hawthorne Avenue Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Hawthorne Avenue Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-jersey/newark-public-schools/hawthorne-avenue-elementary-school/47731"}
