Having a dedicated space stocked with essential hygiene and wellness supplies means that no child has to sit through a school day feeling uncomfortable, embarrassed, or distracted by something as basic as not having what they need to feel their best.\r\nWhen a student can freshen up, feel clean, and walk back into the classroom with their head held high — that is a student who is ready to learn. Teachers have noticed it. Paraprofessionals have noticed it. Most importantly, the kids have noticed it.\r\nIn a school like ours, in a city like Newark, this kind of investment goes beyond supplies. It sends every child who walks through our doors the same powerful message: You are worth caring for. You belong here. You matter.\r\nTo every donor who made this possible — thank you for seeing our students the way we see them every day. You funded more than a project. You funded confidence, dignity, and belonging for 400 kids who deserve nothing less.","fullyFundedDate":1768622112763,"projectUrl":"project/confidence-corner-year-long-care-for-40/10021616/","projectTitle":"Confidence Corner: Year-Long Care for 400 Students","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. G","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-1_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9564820"},{"teacherId":9564820,"projectId":9819325,"letterContent":"Because of you, something beautiful happened in Room 205 – and rippled out into our entire Newark community.\r\nThis winter, my K-2 special education students became helpers, changemakers, and proof that the smallest hands can create the biggest impact. Together, we assembled 1,000 winter warmth kits – 500 for children and 500 for adults in our Newark community – but what you really gave my students was something far more powerful: the knowledge that they matter, that they belong, and that they have something valuable to give.\r\nI watched one student carefully count gloves into each bag, her face serious with concentration. I saw another sort hats by color, taking pride in making each kit perfect. I heard my students ask, \"Will this keep them warm?\" and \"Do you think they'll like it?\" These are children who society often underestimates, children whose IEPs list what they can't do. But you saw what they could do. You believed in them.\r\nAs we packed each kit, we talked about our neighbors. We talked about kindness. We talked about how everyone deserves to feel cared for, and how we all have the power to make someone's day a little brighter, a little warmer. My students learned that giving isn't about having the most – it's about sharing what you have with an open heart.\r\nThese 1,000 kits made a real difference in Newark this winter. We distributed them through community partners, and each one brought warmth to someone who needed it most – a pair of gloves for hands that work hard, a hat for a head that needed shelter from the cold, socks for feet walking our streets. Five hundred children and 500 adults received not just physical warmth, but a message: you are seen, you are valued, you matter to us. Your investment didn't just warm bodies – it strengthened the fabric of our community and showed that in Newark, we take care of our own.\r\nThank you for seeing my students the way I see them – as capable, compassionate, and full of potential. Thank you for turning little hands into warm hearts, and for helping us prove that when we care for each other, everyone rises.","fullyFundedDate":1769201975561,"projectUrl":"project/little-hands-big-hearts-winter-warmth/9819325/","projectTitle":"Little Hands, Big Hearts: Winter Warmth for Our Community","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. G","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-1_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9564820"},{"teacherId":9564820,"projectId":9706029,"letterContent":"I want you to know exactly what your kindness made possible — because my students deserve to be seen.\r\nEvery single child in Room 205 has had to work harder than most just to feel successful. They come in each morning carrying so much, and yet they show up with the biggest hearts and the most beautiful curiosity. What they needed was a chance to learn in a way that finally made sense for them — through their hands, through movement, through the magic of watching something work because they made it work.\r\nThe moment we opened the STEM materials, everything shifted. One of my students who struggles to stay regulated sat completely focused, cranking the Dynamo Lantern over and over, watching the light respond to his effort. Another student who rarely speaks up looked at me and whispered, \"Ms. Keisha, I made that happen.\" I had to hold back tears.\r\nYou did that. Your donation gave my students the gift of believing they are capable — and for children who have been told in so many quiet ways that learning is hard for them, that belief is everything. These materials have completely transformed how my students see the world around them!\r\n\r\nWhen the boxes arrived and we opened everything up, my students were SO excited. Their eyes lit up when they saw all the colorful building models, the multicultural books, and the photographs from different countries. Kids who usually hang back were suddenly raising their hands and asking a million questions about where these places were and who lived there.\r\n\r\nWe've been using everything across different subjects. In social studies, students created maps showing Newark, New Jersey, and how our state fits into the whole country. We've been exploring different types of homes and buildings from around the world - African villages, Chinese architecture, buildings from the Middle East, polar region igloos, and tall city structures. \r\n\r\nOne of my students got really into comparing the Polar Region with desert environments, trying to figure out why people need such different types of homes. Another student was fascinated by the African architecture and spent extra time reading about traditional building styles. We paired the building models with books like \"Sunny's Alphabets\" and \"Muhammad's Friday Friend,\" and it's been amazing to watch them make connections between the stories and the structures.\r\n\r\nThe hands-on piece has been huge for my students. They're building towers, matching architectural models to photographs of real places, and having conversations about how weather and climate affect how people live. We've integrated this into our science unit about living things and their environments, and suddenly geography feels relevant to them in a way it never did before.\r\n\r\nWhat's really special is seeing students connect this to their own lives. Several of my students have family from different countries, and now they're excited to share about their heritage. These materials have validated their experiences while opening their eyes to places they've never heard of.\r\n\r\nWe're planning to keep the momentum going by creating a classroom \"World Museum\" where students can display their work and teach each other about different countries. They're also going to research and present about places their families are from or countries they want to learn more about.\r\n\r\nMany of my students have never traveled outside of Newark, but right now they're exploring the Arctic, Africa, Asia, and so many other places. You've given them something priceless - a window into the wider world and the curiosity to keep exploring it.\r\n\r\nThank you for believing in my students and making this possible. This is the kind of learning they'll remember.","fullyFundedDate":1756314375543,"projectUrl":"project/the-whole-world-in-their-hands-tools-for/9640776/","projectTitle":"The Whole World in Their Hands-Tools for Special Learners","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. G","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-1_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9564820"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_81121","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":513,"numTeachers":35,"percentFrplEligible":66,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":83,"percentWhite":0,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":15,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"14.7:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":59.2,"schoolId":81121,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Avon Avenue Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Avon Avenue Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-jersey/newark-public-schools/avon-avenue-elementary-school/81121"}
