It is used every time a student comes to their lesson, practices at home or performs in a concert. Little by little it wears away. The more they practice, the faster it disappears, and my students love to practice. In addition, it is very delicate, so one little tumble to the floor, and it often shatters into a million little pieces.\r\n\r\nWhen the rosin arrived, we did a full lesson on how to use it, how to preserve it and how to make sure it stays safe and in one piece. We all applied rosin to our bows, to make sure it was being done correctly. After that, we all put our rosin back in our violin and viola cases, not on the edge of the music stand, which gives it the best shot of staying in one piece. We also talked about being careful when carrying the violin in the case. A simple bump against the wall with the case can cause the rosin inside to break. We also reviewed the importance of having our own rosin. Although \"sharing is caring\", sharing can only happen when we are at school. At home, we need to be ready and able to apply rosin when needed.\r\n\r\nRosin is not the most expensive item for strings, but it is only sold at music stores, so it is not always convenient to replace. When a student has no rosin, they cannot play, and that means no progress.\r\n\r\nYour generosity has ensured that my students can continue to play and practice with no interruption. The students were so excited to see the new boxes and couldn't wait to Fun Friday to start playing. \r\n\r\nEvery Friday we hold a Fun Friday in my ESL classroom. Sometimes I assign specific board games for students to play, sometimes they pick their own. I usually play a new game with them the first time. We look at the pictures and words on the box cover and discuss the Objective of the game as well as the rules. The youngest student always goes first. This opens up a great conversation about birthdays, who is younger, who is older, etc. \r\n\r\nSome board games help my students to ask and answer questions. For example, the Guess Who Game helps them practice yes/no questions using \"Does he/she...?\" and \"Is he/she...?\" sentence starters.
