These books have become an essential part of our daily routine, supporting students not only as readers, but as developing learners, friends, and problem-solvers. Through shared read-alouds, small-group discussions, and independent browsing, students are building language to understand themselves and others while strengthening foundational literacy skills.\r\n\r\nUsing these SEL texts, students have engaged in lessons focused on identifying and naming emotions, managing big feelings, developing empathy, and resolving conflicts. Stories about kindness, inclusion, perseverance, and self-regulation have provided concrete, age-appropriate examples that students can connect to their own lives. After reading, children practice skills such as expressing emotions with words, recognizing how actions affect others, taking turns in conversation, and applying calming strategies when they feel frustrated or overwhelmed. These lessons naturally extend into role-play, drawing and writing responses, partner talk, and classroom problem-solving, helping students transfer what they learn from books into real-life situations.\r\n\r\nReading in a kindergarten classroom is active, joyful, and highly interactive. Students listen to stories read aloud with frequent stopping points to ask questions, make predictions, share connections, and act out ideas. They explore books independently, retell stories using pictures, and \"read\" by using illustrations, memory, and emerging print skills. The classroom library is a welcoming space where children choose books that reflect their experiences, spark curiosity, and invite conversation. SEL books, in particular, encourage rich discussion as students eagerly share feelings, personal stories, and observations about characters.\r\n\r\nThe new books and materials are being enjoyed by a wide range of learners. Visual learners are drawn to expressive illustrations that help them interpret emotions. English language learners benefit from clear images, repeated language, and opportunities to discuss feelings in a supportive environment. Students with varying attention spans engage through short, meaningful stories that feel relevant to their lives. Advanced readers enjoy deeper discussions about characters' choices, while developing readers gain confidence by accessing stories they can understand and retell. Across the classroom, students of different learning styles, abilities, and backgrounds are connecting with the books, seeing themselves reflected, and finding a sense of belonging.\r\n\r\nOverall, this SEL book collection has strengthened both the emotional climate and the academic foundation of the classroom. It has helped create a community where students feel safe to express themselves, eager to read, and motivated to learn from one another—laying the groundwork for lifelong literacy and social growth.","fullyFundedDate":1760307027194,"projectUrl":"project/building-big-feelings-in-little-learners/9438976/","projectTitle":"Building Big Feelings in Little Learners","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Silvia","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-7_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7591453"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_81501","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":311,"numTeachers":37,"percentFrplEligible":26,"percentAsian":36,"percentBlack":2,"percentWhite":41,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":15,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 4","studentTeacherRatio":"8.4:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":78.8,"schoolId":81501,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Irwin Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Irwin Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-jersey/east-brunswick-public-school-district/irwin-elementary-school/81501"}
