Right away, they noticed the soft, welcoming space it created, and many asked if they could try it out for their regulation breaks. It quickly became the go-to spot for calming down, resetting, or just taking a quiet moment before rejoining the mainstream setting.\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite moments was watching a student who usually has a hard time finding ways to self-regulate walk over to the rug, curl up with a weighted blanket, and take some deep breaths. A few minutes later, they were ready to rejoin their classmates with a smile. The rug has made these small but powerful moments possible every day, giving students a consistent and safe place to manage their feelings.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, we're teaching students how to use this space as part of their self-regulation strategies. They are learning to recognize when they need a break and how to use the rug as a tool to calm down, reflect, and return to learning. I have implemented the sight word cards as a warmup activity for each new unit, and students are able to reference them when reading and writing. It's perfect for ELL learners because they are accompanied by images and an example sentence. Another favorite across all grade levels are the magnetic pictures. With my youngest learners, we are working on identifying beginning and ending sounds of the pictures and with my older students we are choosing an image and doing some creative writing. Their smiles are contagious, and their enthusiasm is apparent. When my students entered the classroom they were so excited. Our new, big, rug is right in the middle of their desks, where we meet for morning meeting and read-alouds.\r\n\r\nBoth the rug and the floor seats are HUGE hits! They love meeting at the rug and this is the first time in 5 years I have had a rug big enough for my whole class to sit on, with space! They love to work on it independently, they are constantly asking to take out the floor seats - even other students (and teachers!) really like them!\r\n\r\nI am extremely grateful to have these assets in my classroom, helping kids get excited about learning, giving them spaces to work, and be flexible in how they want to learn! These items can be costly especially for small groups of 4 to 6 students at a time and ensuring they all have something, but because of awesome donors like you, for the first time in my teaching career I have plenty for all my learners in my classroom at once.
