As we have traversed the path of quiet reflection and light movement, students have utilized their minds, bodies, souls, and their mats, gifted generously by you, to slow down and be present. \r\n\r\nFrom the beginning of school, students have exclaimed over and reached for these mats, organized neatly in the sturdy yoga mat cart. Even students who are not enrolled in the class, have utilized them for focus and relaxation, reaching for them during independent reading time and whenever they needed a restful recharge. Through it all, these mats have held them up. \r\n\r\nCurrently, in Writing for Peace, we are in the middle of our long-awaited Introduction to Yoga and Light Movement unit. Students have been following a joyful and anticipatory routine of: 1. Come Into the Space (10 minutes of breathing and grounding while listening to soothing music), Reflection (listening to a passage from an inspirational text and responding to it), Preparing the Space (students reach for their mats and are given or find a quiet, appropriate space), yoga (guided practice of common poses whilst utilizing breathwork and mudras), and Cleaning up the Space (moving desks back, cleaning yoga mats, and putting them away). This process has been calming and affirming for all. Many students have even asked to practice yoga in their free periods, as they have so enjoyed the connection to themselves, and their mats. \r\n\r\nI cannot express how satisfied I have been with the experience, and with all of your help. This class, these students, and these mats, have been a bright spot in my year. I know these mats will last for many more to come, enhancing the holistic experience here at West High School. The cleaning wipes are already being put to good use daily. Maintaining a hygienic environment is a top priority, especially during cold and flu season. Having a steady supply allows us to keep desks, shared materials, and high-touch areas clean, which reduces absenteeism and keeps our students healthy and focused on learning. The tissues, likewise, are a daily necessity that we often run out of by mid-year.
