I am very happy to write this letter, to tell you just how impactful your generosity has been.\r\n My goal all along was to be able to create a safe space in my classroom for students to go when they are overstimulated and disregulated. I also not only wanted to create this space, but provide them with tools and resources to access when needed, and teach them how to self regulate. There are a lot of people out there who do not believe that students this young can have so much emotional trauma that comes to school with them. These emotions do not only impact their ability to learn, but also impact their ability to create positive relationships with their peers. By receiving the donation of SEL books, coping strategy posters/cards, breathing technique visuals and sensory tools allowed me to teach my class how to identify their feelings, and discover strategies that help them feel better when they are upset. I was able to use the feelings posters and the SEL books during my morning meeting time, and turn it into a lesson about feelings, friendships, anxiety, etc. I loved the flexibility that all of these tools allowed in my lesson, and that I could differentiate my instruction as needed. \r\n When the packages began arriving it was like Christmas! My class was SO excited to unbox the materials, explore them, and then put them to use! My favorite items were those for emotional regulation, but I am certain that my students absolutely loved all of the art supplies, birthday charts, books, etc. A very big hit was the twinkling lights that we leave on all day! My students have used all of the donations daily. When I explained to them and their families how special it was that we were chosen by a generous stranger who wanted to help our class, I could see how special they realized this was. Everytime we opened a box, we discussed the items and what they were used for. It always was discussed how amazing it was that we, a tiny school in a tiny town in NH, were chosen out of schools and projects from all over the country!\r\n As we enter the holiday season and the new year, emotions are high! My goal is to continue using these materials in my morning meeting activities, reading books and creating projects to go along with them. I have some students this year who need a lot of extra emotional support, and I plan to incorporate the sensory items we received into small group lessons and individualized plans. \r\n I know that this is a project that will be worked on for the entire year and years to come. This generous donation helped make my dream of a safe and supportive classroom a reality. I have been a teacher for 10 years, and I can confidentally say that this is the first year I have been able to really incorporate SEL skills into my daily routines, because I have all of the materials I need. My reading centers are the best they have been, because of the donations like the magnet letters, phonics skills displays, and books. \r\n Whoever you are, whereever you are from, and whatever you do, please know that you helped make a first grade classroom in NH a safe, inviting environement were students regardless of their backgrounds can come and feel supported and are able to learn.
