I requested these books last year, and this fall we are finally opening them together as a class for the first time. The novel is used alongside our historical readings and lessons, giving students a chance to connect nonfiction learning with the lens of historical fiction. Having both perspectives allows students to see not only the facts of history but also how those facts affect human lives, emotions, and relationships. Reading fiction within a historical context helps them better understand abstract concepts such as complicity, identity, and responsibility by seeing those ideas reflected in the lives of characters.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading is always active: students annotate, write weekly responses, and connect each chapter to the larger questions we are asking about human behavior and moral choice. Already, I see many of them deeply engaged with Bruno and Shmuel's story—especially students who don't usually volunteer during historical lectures but come alive when discussing characters and themes. Several students have mentioned that reading this novel helps them \"see\" our historical discussions more clearly, because they can picture how the Holocaust might have shaped the daily lives of children their own age. These materials are giving students a richer, more personal entry point into history that is otherwise very heavy and distant.\r\n\r\nAs we continue through the semester, what I need most in my classroom are resources that make history both rigorous and relatable: texts, visuals, and opportunities for students to connect across different types of learning. Your support in providing this book has done exactly that, and I am deeply grateful. You have given my students not only a novel to read, but also a tool to build empathy, critical thinking, and lasting understanding of one of history's most important lessons.","fullyFundedDate":1741013788490,"projectUrl":"project/enhancing-holocaust-and-genocide-studies/9136750/","projectTitle":"Enhancing Holocaust and Genocide Studies Through Literature","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Parsons","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9696751_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1724286800344","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9696751"},{"teacherId":9496756,"projectId":9026612,"letterContent":"The treats provided for our parties last year were such a huge motivator for the students. We're so grateful for your continued support of our classroom, and I wanted to take a moment to share how your generosity is impacting our students, particularly through the new books we've recently added to our collection.\r\n\r\nMany of our donors, like you, are avid readers, but they may not be as familiar with how teaching these books works in the classroom. The new texts we've introduced offer a wide range of skills and lessons, from developing critical thinking and comprehension strategies to fostering empathy and understanding through diverse perspectives. The students are not only learning to recognize literary devices, but they're also becoming more confident in making connections between the stories and their own lives. In addition, the vocabulary and themes of the books challenge them to think deeply and engage in conversations that go beyond the surface level.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading is an interactive experience. It's a space where students engage in both independent reading and guided group discussions. You'll often see them working in pairs or small groups, discussing the themes of the books, sharing opinions, and sometimes even acting out scenes! These activities help build both their analytical skills and their social skills, creating a community of readers who learn from each other.\r\n\r\nAs for specific students, we've noticed that certain individuals are especially enjoying the new books. One student, in particular, has taken a real liking to the historical fiction novels we've added. Another student who previously struggled with reading has found a new passion for graphic novels, which have allowed them to connect with stories in a way they hadn't before.\r\n\r\nIt's truly heartwarming to witness these moments of growth and discovery.
