While our class lessons provide the historical context, independent reading helps students see the people behind the events we study. Through both fiction and nonfiction, students practice analyzing perspective, making connections between individual experiences and larger historical events, identifying themes, and considering how choices, identity, prejudice, resistance, and survival shaped people's experiences during the Holocaust.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is designed to give students both choice and independence. Students select a book from our growing classroom library and read throughout the semester while we continue studying the Holocaust together. Because there are a variety of memoirs, historical nonfiction, and fiction available, students can choose a story that genuinely interests them. It has been especially rewarding to see students find books they connect with and become invested in experiences or aspects of the Holocaust they may not have encountered through our regular curriculum.\r\n\r\nYour generosity has given my students more choices and, most importantly, more voices to learn from. These books will continue to be used by new groups of students each year, allowing this project to have an impact far beyond just one class. These students were in concurrent enrollment classes that allowed graphing calculators, and yet they couldn't afford their own to use at home on assignments. They were at a large disadvantage because even if they used an online graphing calculator, it would then be different than the one used in class, which would make them less confident on their assessments.\r\n\r\nBy gifting the graphing calculators to students so that they could use them at home, students were able to become proficient in these specific calculators, which are tools commonly used in upper level college math classes.\r\n\r\nBecause the students own these calculators, they can continue to excel and keep up with their peer in their college math classes, as well. Many of my students come into high school intimidated by Shakespeare's language, but having access to the side-by-side modern translation has helped them build confidence as readers and thinkers. Instead of getting stuck on unfamiliar vocabulary or sentence structure, students are now able to focus on deeper literary skills such as analyzing characterization, exploring themes, tracing conflicts, and understanding how Shakespeare uses figurative language and dramatic irony. The books have also opened the door for meaningful class discussions about family expectations, impulsive decisions, peer pressure, and relationships—topics that feel very relevant to teenagers today.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom has become much more interactive and engaging because every student now has access to their own copy of the text. Students annotate directly in their books, act out scenes with partners, participate in small-group discussions, and compare the original Shakespearean language with the modern translation to better understand tone and meaning. Some of my more reluctant readers, who would normally shut down when faced with a challenging text, have been especially excited about being able to follow along independently and contribute to conversations with confidence. Watching students who once believed Shakespeare was \"too hard\" actively debate characters' choices and quote lines from the play has been incredibly rewarding.
