Our counselor has borrowed the Calm Ball and the communication dice to help students one-on-one. \r\n\r\nPlease understand we cannot include pictures of our students as we try to protect their anonymity due to their status as confirmed sex trafficking victims. My students have been enjoying the new resources very much. Cornhole has been a huge hit with all of my students. At first, they were reluctant to play the game. Once I covered how to play and taught them about the basics, the excitement built quickly. Playing cornhole has taught my students that not everything in life is easy. Sometimes you hit your mark and sink the beanbag, and other times you miss the board completely. Such is life! Such a fun game and so many great lessons.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the materials there were some puzzled looks. Some of them had never been exposed to the variety of games/equipment. As was the case with cornhole, there was hesitation with playing the new games. As time progresses the students are increasing participation more and more. \r\n\r\nNext steps...the focus will be on continuing teaching fun and engaging lifetime activities to the students. I have been spending roughly 4-6 weeks on each unit and this seems to have been enough time to teach the students. Our students are all victims of sex trafficking, so their anonymity is taken very seriously. I hope you will understand why the pictures are all taken from the back. I also needed to have some of our teachers stand in as most of the students are camera-shy, even though I promised their faces would not be in the pictures. \r\n\r\nStudents, teachers, and administrators alike were all very impressed with the quality of the lap desks. They are extremely sturdy, well-constructed, and comfortable to use. Sometimes, our students don't like the confinement of a classroom and would prefer to work in a more open area. These desks and the wireless mice make that possible!\r\n\r\nStudents also enjoyed making origami creations during a brain break and have asked to do more of them. Each student can utilize any necessary materials when needed which in turn maximizes seat time, work time, and ultimately creativity. These donations have gone so far already and will continue to serve this specific set of students for years to come. \r\n\r\nIn the upcoming months we will be creating more and more so that students can work on their final project for the year. These books help our students explore universal themes in literature and make connections. By studying characters, setting, and events, they are able to understand what motivates humanity and why we continue to make the same universal choices. Studying these works help to improve critical thinking skills, build vocabulary, and foster writing. \r\n\r\nStudents have time to read the books in class. They have opportunities to listen to the book on audio, read silently, and explore important passages with close reading. Close reading involves multiple readings where important details, such as the use of vocabulary, and literary devices, are analyzed to see how they help thematic development. Over time, however, they recognized how important it is to have appropriate materials for learning. They have commented about how much easier it is for them to graph now that that they have actual graph paper. Your generosity has removed barriers and made learning more accessible for the students. \r\n\r\nI would like to thank you for providing the consumable materials I was lacking.
