As inmates and adult learners, they often get overlooked when it comes time to receive funding or be included in traditional school allocations; however, because they are serving time, they have also had the opportunity to reflect on their decisions and how to become better, which is why they choose to enroll in education. Attending school in prison is not required or forced; these inmates choose to enroll in something they have failed at for years. They choose to overcome learning challenges that have prevented them from graduating. \r\n\r\nAlso, most of them have children of their own who often are struggling in school while their dad is incarcerated, so they both go to school and motivate each other. Hopefully, being able to attend school and graduate will strengthen family connections and encourage academics for their own children. \r\n\r\nAs an English teacher, I work on their reading and writing skills as well as their speaking and communication skills to prepare them to re-enter society.
