By learning why axolotls require cool, stable water temperatures, students are developing a deeper understanding of animal biology, habitats, and the ways environmental conditions impact living organisms. These lessons have sparked thoughtful conversations about cause and effect, health, and the importance of preventative care in science.\r\n\r\nWith the aquarium chiller in place, I am now able to teach these concepts with confidence, knowing that Mushu is safe and comfortable even as temperatures rise. Students actively monitor the tank temperature, discuss why the cooler is essential, and connect what they learn to broader topics like climate, ecosystems, and animal welfare. The chiller has turned daily observations into authentic learning moments, reinforcing that science isn't just something we read about, it's something we practice.\r\n\r\nMany students have formed a strong bond with Mushu and take great pride in helping care for him. Some check the thermometer each morning, while others eagerly explain to classmates why keeping the water cool is so important. Because of your generosity, my students are learning compassion, responsibility, and real-world science while ensuring our classroom pet remains healthy and thriving. Thank you for helping us protect Mushu and support hands-on learning in our classroom.","fullyFundedDate":1757513518317,"projectUrl":"project/operation-chill-the-tank/9387525/","projectTitle":"Operation: Chill the Tank!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Atlera","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7110612_orig.jpg?crop=961,961,x0,y54&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1581020598270","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7110612"},{"teacherId":7110612,"projectId":8930761,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generous support, reading in our classroom has become more engaging, inclusive, and meaningful than ever before. The new books introduced students to important skills such as identifying emotions, building empathy, understanding informational text features, and making connections between what they read and the real world. Our books about axolotls and women in science have strengthened research skills, curiosity, and vocabulary while also encouraging students to see themselves as scientists and problem-solvers. The social-emotional books have opened the door for thoughtful discussions about feelings, relationships, and self-regulation...skills that are just as important as academics!\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom now looks like focused, joyful learning. With individual headphones and organized storage, students are able to fully engage in digital texts, audiobooks, and interactive lessons without distractions. You'll see students listening intently to nonfiction passages, following along with read-alouds, and revisiting texts at their own pace. Whiteboard markers have transformed lessons into hands-on experiences, allowing students to respond to reading prompts, brainstorm ideas, and collaborate with peers in real time. Our classroom truly feels like a space where learning is active, shared, and exciting!\r\n\r\nSeveral students who previously struggled with focus or confidence have especially thrived. Some light up when listening to stories through their headphones, while others eagerly gravitate toward the emotion books to help express how they're feeling. Our science-loving students are captivated by learning about the axolotl, asking thoughtful questions and making connections to ecosystems and animal adaptations. Because of you, my students are not only growing as readers, but also as thinkers, collaborators, and compassionate individuals.
