The Elephant and Piggie series were the first to go out on display, along with the Frog and Toad set of books, since we were just starting our book character election project. Throughout this theme in the library, students were exposed to story times focused on the pairs of characters. I also selected three core values that represented each pair. Then the fourth and fifth grade students then practiced digital citizenship skills in order to make positive campaign posters and advertisements for the two sets of candidates. Finally, we concluded with an election, in which Frog and Toad beat Elephant and Piggie by only three votes!\r\nA handful of our other books relating to voting and elections went out for students to checkout and use for independent reading. This allowed students the opportunity to explore this topic specifically through age appropriate characters that they were possibly already familiar with, such as Amelia Bedelia, Bad Kitty, and Clifford the Big Red Dog. There were also a couple of new non-fiction titles to appeal to the students that appreciate reading more factual information.\r\nFinally, we've recently enjoyed learning about Native American customs and cultural practices through a variety of exciting new selections. It was especially gratifying to be able to offer a variety of different levels of these new books, as there was really something for everyone from preschool to high school. Some of the high school students were able to use these in their dual credit Native American studies courses, while elementary students were able to do fun little pictograph and totem pole projects to share the information they learned. We purchased several items to enhance the learning in our Title I classroom in Winifred, MT. Wobble chairs have been a great addition to our room; students may opt for a chair that allows them movement during instruction and independent work time. Chair bands also offer a quiet way for wiggly feet to move during class without being disruptive. \r\n\r\nOur next favorite learning supplies are the orthographic word mapping paddles. They are double-sided, magnetic, and made of whiteboard material! My young readers are able to write on them with wipe-off markers, practice word segmentation with magnets, and write spelling words on them as well! \r\n\r\nHandwriting Without Tears provides a solid foundation for our elementary students, so our new cursive posters help us remember cursive letter formation.\r\n\r\nWe couldn't be happier and more appreciative of our new supplies. The books relating to the Olympics were the first to go out on display, and the students were thrilled to check out library books that related to the Summer Olympics and the Library Olympics, since we were just finishing up that theme. During the Library Olympics, students even used the books to look up unique facts about three different Olympic events. A couple of books were introduced to assist with our digital citizenship and acceptance lessons. Some of the remaining books will primarily be read as part of our Battle of the Books project initially.\r\n\r\nMany of these new books will be read independently by the students during library, classroom reading, and their own free-time or read with people at home who are special to them both this year and for years to come. Also, a few of the books went right into the schedule for our weekly read aloud. For example,the Little Shaq series was a hit with the 2nd graders that are looking to begin simple chapter books, and Jasper Rabbit's Creepy Tales were enjoyed by all grade levels around Halloween. However, the books will continue to be featured and used every few years in rotations with special events in the library.\r\n\r\nWe've had several students enjoy some of these books that may not have picked them other than they were exciting new book options. It was especially exciting to be able to offer a variety of different levels of new books; there was really something for everyone from preschool to high school. A few have encouraged students to read other books already in our library as they've been exposed to \"new\" characters and enjoyed the new titles.
