We identified the landmarks in our immediate surroundings and marked them with a cardinal direction. A direction of travel was called out, students adjusted their compasses accordingly and followed that path. \r\n\r\nWe then leveled up to using secondary directions (NE, SW, etc) and used the compasses to find those directions. \r\n\r\nWatching their engagement was very encouraging. Furthermore, when a classmate was expressing they couldn't find the direction or didn't understand, another student would rush to help them adjust their compass correctly and encourage them to find the correct direction. The team building aspect of this activity was unexpected and appreciated. \r\n\r\nOur next steps are to use the compasses degrees as the bearings. This will coincide well with our study of multiplication and multiples of 9. \r\n\r\nOur final lesson will be an orienteering challenge course. Students will follow clues with directional instructions and set their compasses based on instructions to lead them to the next clue. We are very excited! \r\n\r\nYour donation has been a truly exceptional addition to our classroom experience.","fullyFundedDate":1755805032124,"projectUrl":"project/finding-their-way-compasses-in-the-clas/9492801/","projectTitle":"Finding Their Way! It has been amazing to see our students grow and learn with the help of all these wonderful tools. Many of these students do not have access to helpful tools at home and you can see them light up being able to participate with peers. \r\nThe translators have provided the students with a voice. We are all trying our best to understand each other and give space to hear these amazing students who are not only learning our curriculum, but also how to communicate in English. This ability to be heard and understood has opened the doors for better understanding of what we are teaching, they are retaining vocabulary words and have higher comprehension. \r\nThe whisper phones have encouraged students to improve fluency and have even encouraged inflection and emotion in reading. I have seen my 3rd grade students go from very monotone, emotionless droning to nearly acting out passages with the inflection and spirit they can find in reading. \r\nMy favorite tool has been the vocabulary cards that have multiple languages. They have created a bridge between many students, with various home languages. At recess, I can show one of the cards and because it has a picture, it can reach students who have limited literacy, whether due to limited exposure or developmental stages. \r\nThank you for believing in the power of communication and literacy for all students.","fullyFundedDate":1726537320396,"projectUrl":"project/innovative-tools-for-supporting-literacy/8789865/","projectTitle":"Innovative Tools for Supporting Literacy with English Language Learners","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Abney","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-4_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9743267"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_78421","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":508,"numTeachers":36,"percentFrplEligible":30,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":87,"percentIndigenous":1,"percentLatinx":4,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"14.1:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"TOWN_REMOTE"},"inStateSupporters":75.5,"schoolId":78421,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Edgerton Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Edgerton Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/montana/kalispell-public-school-district-5/edgerton-elementary-school/78421"}
