In some cases, I left items out for older students (4th/5th grade) that I had purchased with K/1/2 in mind. These were things like the play dim sum set and books, the Lion head puppet, and the lift-a-flap Chinese New Year books. But, because the students had a bit of background knowledge but little experiential knowledge (how many of our kids have eaten true dim sum?) they actually were totally engaged and asked to do the stations again! \r\n\r\nOne of the biggest surprises was the student engagement with the chopstick activity. They practiced picking up dried beans, which are slippery little devils. But many were determined to learn how to use them and there were a few who were amazingly good to start with. \r\n\r\nI purchased some books for the music room that I had always used out of my personal collection, and now our students have access to them permanently as part of their school collection. I read several aloud each year, different ones to different grade levels, as I find the joy of reading aloud to be so impactful. The older students have a few that they call to re-read from their younger years and I always try to sneak one more in for them. \r\n\r\nStudents and staff alike comment every year on our Chinese new year decorations and unit, and your donation helped to make it all the more special. Thank you for helping to open up our students' worldview, to spread love and appreciation for another beautiful culture, at a time when we desperately need unity.
