We are in Havre, Montana, which has a large Native American population. Reading books that represent many of the children in our school has helped build relationships with those students and deepen the understanding of other students to cultural traditions and ways of life. As educators, we also know that any hands-on material students can use, especially in math, deepen their understanding of concepts. The students have really enjoyed using the hands – on math materials purchased for our classroom, especially the pop-its! One of the pictures I included is one of my lower level students using the write-on number line to assist him in addition equations.
