Each child was able to pull one thing from the box! We immediately set to work on finding just the right reading cushion, which we now call cookies, and a good book. A few of the favorites include The Biggie book of Piggie and Gerald. The kids feel very accomplished that they can read such a heavy book, and are constantly engaged by the simple stories inside. \r\n\r\nAs a group, we have been using our new watercolor supplies as a way of practicing reading retention. Our school utilizes a reading curriculum that includes many fables. As we have read through the series of fables the student have utilized their supplies to choose their moral answer to the question the stories provide. For example, we read about a chubby dog on a chain explaining to a stray why he has so much food, but also very little freedom. We then folded our watercolor paper in half and wrote food or freedom on the top. The students illustrated their preference only, having easy access to care or freedom. The majority leaned toward freedom, while quite a few chose burgers for their food illustration.","fullyFundedDate":1726949866789,"projectUrl":"project/read-and-retain-with-art/8789739/","projectTitle":"Read and Retain With Art","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. S","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-8_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9752195"},{"teacherId":3741564,"projectId":8681241,"letterContent":"We cannot thank you enough for helping build a special reading area in our little classroom. The weather is a bit brisky in Eastern Montana and the soft rugs helps keep us comfortable! My little first graders took great pride in putting together the book shelf, the mobile supply carts, and lamps, and they really enjoyed working as a team to \"decorate\" (as they called it) the new reading area. This quickly became a hot spot in the room.\r\n\r\nAs are most school districts we too face financial shortcomings. Teachers make up the difference to help promote success in the classroom. Your donation has given our students hands-on math and reading materials that have brought joy and engagement into their everyday learning.\r\n\r\nHow We're Using the New Resources\r\nOur students are already diving into these hands-on resources with excitement! One recent project we loved was using the \"Nuts about Counting\" resource where my students counted and screwed on the correct number of bolts onto the screws. Another was an autistic student working on blending words using the cards with the tactile dots for blending the sounds. These interactive activities have allowed our students to connect learning to play, creating a space that's both fun and meaningful.\r\n\r\nTheir Initial Reactions\r\nWhen our students first saw the new materials, their faces lit up. One student said, 'Wow, I've never seen these before!' as they explored the writing board with slide to erase capabilities. These resources brought smiles and excitement, showing just how powerful hands-on learning can be.\r\n\r\nNext Steps for Our Students\r\nLooking ahead, we're focusing on using these resources to continue to building foundational skills. With these resources, we're not just teaching skills—we're helping our students build confidence, independence, and a love of learning.\r\n\r\nYour support has truly made a difference, and we're so thankful to have you as part of our classroom journey.
