Students became more engaged during reading instruction because the stories provided opportunities to practice foundational literacy skills while exploring emotions in relatable, age-appropriate ways.\r\n\r\nAs students expanded their emotional vocabulary, they became more confident identifying and expressing their own feelings. Classroom discussions grew richer as children learned to recognize emotions in characters, make personal connections, and develop empathy for others. Many students began using the language from the books during everyday interactions, helping them communicate their needs, resolve conflicts more peacefully, and build stronger relationships with classmates.\r\n\r\nThe books also created a safe and welcoming environment where students felt comfortable sharing their experiences and practicing self-reflection. Integrating social-emotional learning into literacy instruction strengthened reading comprehension, critical thinking, and communication skills while supporting students' overall well-being.\r\n\r\nThis project benefited the whole child by fostering both academic success and emotional growth. Thanks to this funding, students now have ongoing access to high-quality books that will continue to build confident readers, compassionate classmates, and resilient learners for years to come.","fullyFundedDate":1724688069861,"projectUrl":"project/enhancing-literacy-and-emotional-intelli/8702291/","projectTitle":"Enhancing Literacy and Emotional Intelligence Through Feeling Books","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Tyrrell","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp6752505_orig.jpg?crop=3027,3027,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1724618310801","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/6752505"},{"teacherId":6752505,"projectId":8702625,"letterContent":"Thanks to the generosity of our donors, this project has had a positive impact on both the emotional well-being and learning success of my students. The new resources have helped create a classroom environment where students feel safe, regulated, and ready to learn.\r\n\r\nThe Warmies quickly became a favorite calming tool, providing students with comfort during moments of stress, anxiety, or overwhelm. Having a soothing, weighted item available has helped many students practice self-regulation and return to learning more quickly.\r\n\r\nThe Bluetooth speaker has transformed the atmosphere of our classroom. Calming music during independent work and transitions has helped students stay focused, while audiobooks have increased engagement with literacy and created enjoyable shared learning experiences.\r\n\r\nThe standing desk has given students a healthy outlet for movement throughout the day. Students who benefit from changing positions or standing while they work have shown increased focus, perseverance, and productivity. It has become an important option for meeting individual learning and sensory needs without disrupting instruction.\r\n\r\nTogether, these resources have strengthened our classroom community by supporting the whole child. Students are better equipped to manage their emotions, stay engaged in learning, and develop the confidence to do their best each day. This project continues to make a lasting difference, and I am incredibly grateful for the generosity that made it possible.","fullyFundedDate":1724694376066,"projectUrl":"project/finding-your-calm/8702625/","projectTitle":"Finding Your Calm","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Tyrrell","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp6752505_orig.jpg?crop=3027,3027,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1724618310801","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/6752505"},{"teacherId":2078134,"projectId":10006833,"letterContent":"Thank you for supporting our project, Helping Struggling Readers Grow, One Story at a Time. When the Tonieboxes and stories arrived, students were immediately drawn to them. Their curiosity quickly turned into focused listening as they explored the characters and gathered around to hear the stories. Because the audio removes the pressure of decoding, students can focus on meaning, language, and understanding the story.\r\n\r\nDuring reading intervention, students listen closely and actively engage with the stories, which also allows me to spend dedicated one-on-one time supporting individualized reading skill development. One memorable moment occurred when a student paused the Toniebox, walked over to me, and asked what a new vocabulary word from the story meant. That small moment showed real ownership of learning. Students are practicing essential literacy skills such as identifying characters, recalling details, making predictions, and retelling events.\r\n\r\nNext, we will build on these listening experiences through small group discussions, vocabulary exploration, and retelling activities. These resources are helping students strengthen comprehension, confidence, and the critical reading skills they need to grow as successful readers.
