We got started playing them in 3rd and 4th grade classes right away, and students picked it up quickly. They were so excited to learn, and in 3rd grade students really mastered 3 chords before the end of the school year. In 4th grade, we learned 4 chords, and my hope for next year is to go even further so that they have access to more songs that they recognize and can play along to.\r\n\r\nStudents worked on finger dexterity, steady beat, accompanying harmonies, and more this year because of the ukulele unit. It also provided excellent preparation for 5th grade band and orchestra, as well as caring for expensive musical instruments. Students learned how to hold and really take care of a musical instrument, which will serve them well in the coming years.\r\n\r\nDuring the last music class of the year for 5th grade students, I gave them a quick crash course on ukulele (since it was not part of their 3rd and 4th grade curriculum). They were incredibly excited and picked up 2 chords in just 20 minutes. They were grateful for the chance to try it out, and I know there are several students in my music classes who now have a ukulele on their birthday/Christmas wish list.
