They were elated. They were excited. But most importantly, they were inspired. I could feel the energy in the room shift and could almost smell the sparks of creativity coming off of them. What I handed out blank canvases and paint and lipstick, but what they took from those boxes were tools of expression.\r\n\r\nMy students are working on a year-long portfolio that is centered around a single driving question. Their inquiries are so different from one another, so it was very cool to see them all focused on the same thing when I opened the boxes of supplies for them. A student focusing on fashion design took the set of lipsticks to stain fabrics. Another student took the paint pens and began creating a character to explore themself and how they see the world. A different student took the paint pens to explore their cultural experience as a Native American. The white paint was mixed into other colors to create dozens of tints to show both the destructive and peaceful sides of nature. The same pack of canvases was taken in so many different directions from polluted waters full of life to science fiction-inspired wars to the beauty of Montana's public land access. \r\n\r\nThat is the thing about art. You can start with the same supplies in a room of 13 people and end up in 13 wildly exciting different places. That is what is happening in room 171 this year thanks to your donations. Students are pouring their heart, minds, and efforts into these portfolios that could have the potential to take their lives in 13 wildly exciting and different directions.","fullyFundedDate":1766948377447,"projectUrl":"project/ap-art-and-design/9964154/","projectTitle":"AP Art and Design","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Threadgoode","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-1_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10185400"},{"teacherId":5960495,"projectId":9971896,"letterContent":"The generosity of people is always so encouraging to me. Thank you all so much! This particular project was for little items. These might not seem meaningful to most, but they have had such a great impact on my students. They have made my classroom more organized, provided supplies for hands on activities, and given my hungry students a snack to calm their stomachs and allow them to focus on their learning.\r\n\r\nI had one student ask if I had any food in my class and when I said yes, he was surprised. He asked if he could have something and his face lit up when I offered him a granola bar. You would have thought I had given him $100.
