In our classroom, reading is about much more than simply finishing a book. Students are learning how to analyze characters, recognize themes, identify figurative language, and support their ideas with text evidence. These books give students engaging stories that allow them to practice those skills while building confidence as readers.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom happens in several ways. Students spend time reading independently and immersing themselves in a story, and we also read together as a class, pausing to discuss key moments, ask questions, and make predictions. Students also participate in First Chapter Fridays, where we explore the opening chapter of a new book together and discuss characters, make predictions, and share their first impressions of the story.\r\n\r\nOur school librarian introduced a Truman Awards Reading Challenge that motivated many students to read even more. Those who read four of the books earned a trip to the Children's Literature Festival, where they attended sessions with two of the authors. Because of the generosity of our donors, my students now have access to books that spark curiosity, encourage discussion, and help them grow as readers. Their generosity is helping create meaningful learning experiences that will impact students for years to come.","fullyFundedDate":1769399438373,"projectUrl":"project/building-readers-through-the-truman-awar/10056012/","projectTitle":"Building Readers Through the Truman Award Reading Challenge","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Greenwell","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp355231_orig.jpg?crop=400,400,x0,y42&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1771612274196","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/355231"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_78114","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":129,"numTeachers":15,"percentFrplEligible":28,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":97,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":0,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"7 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"8.6:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_REMOTE"},"inStateSupporters":66.7,"schoolId":78114,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about North Shelby Junior Senior High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"North Shelby Junior Senior High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/missouri/north-shelby-school-district/north-shelby-junior-senior-high-school/78114"}
