These may seem like a simple piece of technology, but they make a huge difference in how my students are able to learn each day.\r\n\r\nTechnology in kindergarten is used very intentionally. Students use their devices to listen to books, practice phonics and early reading skills, work on letter sounds, build math skills, and complete activities that provide practice at their individual learning levels. Our new headphones allow every student to hear the instruction and feedback from their own device without competing with the sounds of an entire classroom full of computers!\r\n\r\nThe students were especially excited to have headphones that are comfortable, reliable, and made for classroom use. They love being able to put on their headphones, log into their learning activities, and work independently. It gives them a sense of ownership over their learning—and, of course, kindergarteners think having their own headphones makes them feel pretty grown up!\r\n\r\nI've especially noticed the difference for students who are easily distracted or who need to hear something more than once before they are ready to respond. Headphones help create a little bubble of focus for those students. They can listen carefully, repeat directions or sounds when needed, and work at a pace that is comfortable for them. It has also been wonderful for students who are developing confidence as readers because they can listen and practice without worrying about what everyone else around them is doing.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, these headphones help me use technology as a learning tool rather than simply screen time. They allow my students to receive individualized practice while I work with other students in small groups, making our classroom technology much more purposeful and effective.\r\n\r\nThank you for giving our kindergarteners another tool to help them become confident, independent learners. These magnetic alphabet boards were something I had wanted for my students for a long time, and they are even better than I imagined. Honestly, this may be one of my favorite DonorsChoose projects I have ever had funded!\r\n\r\nThe boards are incredibly well made and give each student a hands-on way to work with letters and sounds. We can use the magnetic letters to practice identifying letters, matching letters to sounds, building words, segmenting and blending sounds, changing sounds in words, and so many other important early phonics skills. For kindergarteners, being able to physically move and manipulate the letters makes phonics instruction so much more concrete and engaging.\r\n\r\nThese boards are not something we will use once and put away—they will be a part of our phonics instruction again and again throughout the school year and for many classes of kindergarteners to come.\r\n\r\nI am truly so grateful to everyone who donated to this project. There is something pretty magical about opening a brand-new box of crayons or markers when you are five years old. They could not wait to choose their colors and get to work.\r\n\r\nWe have already been putting these materials to good use throughout our school day. My students use them during writing to illustrate their stories, during math to sort and represent their thinking, and during literacy and other classroom projects. One of my favorite things to see is a student proudly adding details to a picture and then using that picture to help tell the story they have written.
