When the boxes of algebra tiles, fraction models, and integer chips started to show up, the kids were instantly wanting to get into them and see what they are. Middle schoolers usually give their workbooks the side-eye, but these bright, tactile tools immediately piqued their interest. They didn't see them as \"work\"—they saw them as hands-on puzzles and fun.\r\n\r\nWe've been using them during whole-class lessons and independent work time. The best moment happened during our integer unit while tackling subtraction with negative numbers—which usually drives everyone crazy. Students were using the chips to build \"zero pairs\" on their desks. Seeing that lightbulb go off in real-time because students could actually *see* the math was incredible.\r\n\r\nNext up, we're taking what they've learned with their hands and connecting it to paper. As we move into linear equations, we plan to build the problem with algebra tiles first, draw it out on whiteboards second, and finally write out the standard equations.
