My students are thrilled with the new homework system. \r\n\r\nJust a small recap, I ordered file crates, file folders, and turn in trays so that I could have a more organized system for turning in homework. The file crates are able to hold 15 weeks worth of extra copies that students can grab from when they are absent. Each week is labeled with the specific assignments and the \"Homework Slip\" for that week. Homework Slips are used as a check list for students so they know what is due each Friday. When they enter the room on a Friday, they grab the homework slip, staple all assignments with the slip, and turn them in. \r\n\r\nMany students have flooded me with gratitude that I am allowing them the autonomy to choose when the best time for them to complete assignments is. High school students live very buys lives from sports, extracurriculars, and jobs. A \"one-size fits all\" homework routine was not working for my classroom. \r\n\r\nI, myself, and loving the new system as well. I used to spend an hour every day grading homework for all my classes and entering grades. Now I spend 1 hour on Fridays only entering in grades. These 3D printing pens have opened up the possibility for students to craft and visualize their Calculus in ways that they would not have previously been able to. We've used them to draw 3 dimensional solids that otherwise would've only existed on paper and in our imaginations!\r\n\r\nMost recently, we have used these pens to create an \"optimal\" can for common products. In this cumulative project, students used calculus to measure cans for objects like tuna, soda, energy drinks, soup, and glass jars, then design their own containers that use the least amount of material. Much to their surprise, the dimensions they came up with do not match what the factories have chosen. At the end of this project, students used the 3D pens to create their \"optimal\" can. \r\n\r\nThis project is just the beginning of what we plan to do with the pens but already, they have given the students concrete examples of the abstract calculus they've been working so hard to earn . Without your help, we wouldn't be ending the year on such a high note! There was great suspense in waiting for supplies to arrive and it encouraged students to get work done so that they were ready to start the new project. \r\n\r\nOver sixty students have been able to use these looms in this short time, including students 9th grade clear through 12th grade.
