At a skills level, lessons focus on: using text evidence to support an interpretation; identifying and analyzing point of view and author purpose; tracking character development across a whole text; noticing craft moves (such as sentence-level syntax, figurative language, and structure) and explaining their effect; and synthesizing across multiple texts to build thematic understanding. We also teach comprehension strategies—predicting, visualizing, summarizing, and asking purposeful questions—and model how those strategies shift as students move from literal to inferential to evaluative reading.\r\n\r\nIn my classroom, reading looks like a workshop that blends teacher-led mini-lessons, structured small-group instruction, and ample independent practice. A typical sequence begins with a 10–12 minute mini-lesson that models a single, concrete skill (for example, \"how to annotate for evidence of a character's motivation\"), using a short excerpt projected for all to see. Students then move to guided practice in pairs or triads where they apply the skill to a short passage and receive targeted feedback. During independent reading or book-club time, students annotate, complete a focused short-response routine (one-paragraph evidence-based answer), and then meet in literature circles to discuss guided questions tied to standards. My students are not strong readers being in Special Education and these books help them learn more easily.","fullyFundedDate":1651594653394,"projectUrl":"project/the-tradition-of-books-continues/6448204/","projectTitle":"The Tradition of Books Continues","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. K.","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp5440963_orig.jpg?crop=3106,3106,x526,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1733759521406","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/doniphanproud5th"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_123650","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":311,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":92,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":4,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"3 - 5","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_REMOTE"},"inStateSupporters":73.7,"schoolId":123650,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Dohiphan Intermediate School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Dohiphan Intermediate School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/missouri/doniphan-school-district-r1/dohiphan-intermediate-school/123650"}
