These new books have already made such a difference in our classroom and have given my students the opportunity to experience reading in a much more meaningful way.\r\n\r\nInstead of only reading short passages, we are able to spend time with an entire novel, getting to know the characters and watching the story develop over time. As we read, students are practicing important skills like making inferences, identifying character traits using text evidence, determining cause and effect, learning new vocabulary, and responding to what they read through discussion and writing.\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite things about using novels is seeing students become invested in the story. Reading in our classroom is very interactive. We stop to make predictions, discuss surprising moments, look back in the text for evidence, and talk about how characters are changing. Students keep reading notebooks where they can track their thinking and practice the skills we are learning.\r\n\r\nThe biggest impact has been seeing students who do not always think of themselves as \"readers\" become excited about what is going to happen next. They ask to keep reading, talk about the characters with each other, and make connections that I do not always see when we are working with shorter texts. Having a book that we experience together has helped make reading feel less like an assignment and more like something our classroom community gets to share.\r\n\r\nYour generosity has allowed me to give my students more than just new books. You have helped create opportunities for them to build confidence, think deeply about what they read, and hopefully discover that reading can actually be something they enjoy.
