It has helped to calm our kids by finding something for them to fidget with their hands. The small sensory mazes are so calming for our kids, because it give them something to focus on in stead of the thing that is upsetting them. \r\nThere were two things that were my hands down absolute favorites. One was the weighted lap blanket. Two of our kids benefited so much from these, because it offered the deep pressure they were seeking to achieve calmness. The photo printer allows me to print glossy, color photos of the students on special days and display them in the room. Students use the word magnets--so many sets!--are used for sentence building and poetry and just silly idea creation in between projects. I use the sentence strips and paper products to display student work. These materials provide opportunities for creativity, recognize their efforts, and create a feeling of community.\r\n\r\nWhen one students starts to build words together with the word magnets, a few others will join in and it turn into a social activity. It is a light moment, an interlude in the day and I love to see them expressing themselves (or just forming jokes) as a break between lessons and the things that take up mental space during the day.\r\n\r\nHowever, the photo printer is the product that brought the most excitement to the students because they love to see the photos change on the photo wall. Think of how excited students are at the end of the year when yearbooks are out and they are looking at those pages in class; it is like a smaller piece of that, but on a regular basis. These materials show my students visually that this is a community, that they belong here, that they are valued and interesting. Because of you, my students now have access to snacks, candy, and stress-relief tools that meet both their physical and emotional needs throughout the school day. These resources have already started making a meaningful difference by helping students stay focused, feel supported, and regulate their emotions in healthy ways.\r\n\r\nThe snacks and candy are available for students who may come to school hungry or aren't able to bring additional food from home. Now, when a student is distracted due to hunger or has low energy, they can grab a quick snack and return to learning without feeling embarrassed or left out. The candy also serves as a fun and simple relationship-builder—something small that helps students feel seen and appreciated. The stress tools are used during calm-down breaks or when a student needs help managing their emotions during a tough day. Having these items available in my office creates a safe and supportive environment where students can learn to self-regulate and focus more fully on their work. I didn't anticipate the opportunities it created for me to meet students in my school. It has provided a means for me to break misconceptions about me. They see that I'm not mean, I'm firm. I'm not against them, I am holding them accountable. \r\n\r\nAs we continue building a culture of support and care in our classroom, these tools are helping students develop emotional awareness and self-advocacy. They are learning when they need a break, when they need fuel, and how to ask for help—skills that are vital for academic and life success. Thank you for making this possible. Your generosity has truly empowered students in our school.","fullyFundedDate":1738889134682,"projectUrl":"project/snacks-to-help-students-stay-on-track/8885385/","projectTitle":"Snacks to Help Students Stay on Track!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Taylor","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-8_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9806355"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_11630","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1335,"numTeachers":85,"percentFrplEligible":62,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":19,"percentWhite":67,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":6,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"15.7:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_SMALL"},"inStateSupporters":29.4,"schoolId":11630,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Petal High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Petal High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/mississippi/petal-school-district/petal-high-school/11630"}
