This past summer as I did this, one of the projects I wanted to work on was expanding my classroom library. Our school has a great school library that students visit once weekly where they can check out book from a great variety of selections. However, I wanted students to be able to have good chapter books readily available and visible in our classroom to promote reading.\r\n\r\nWhen I went through the process of selecting books for my first Donors Choose project, I thought specifically of chapter books that would be interesting to my fourth-grade students. In the past, a few students have been interested in reading chapter books, but most students select short books to read. While any reading is great, I wanted to try to turn students towards reading longer text in a variety of stories they found exciting and engaging.\r\n\r\nBefore school started, I decided to label each book with their A.R. (Accelerated Reader) level but also to organize them by their chapter book series. When students came in during Open House to meet me and get ready to start our school year, many of them were excited to find so many books to choose from. One of them said, \"We have our own library in our classroom.\"\r\n\r\nAs of today, we have now finished our first nine weeks period. Our school displays the number of A.R. points for each class. In our school of pre-kindergarten through fourth grade, we have near 25 classes. Our class has consistently had the most A.R. points so far this year! I have no doubt that one of the reasons for the success with independent reading this year is because of the great variety of books at their fingertips!\r\n\r\nStudents regularly visit the book bins to carefully select books they are excited to read. I look forward to seeing this excitement continue for them throughout the school year.
