My students' faces absolutely lit up as I told them the boxes were their surprise. They eagerly gathered around to see what was inside, exclaiming with excitement as we unpacked the colorful ten frames, number bonds, and other hands-on tools you made possible. The room was buzzing with curiosity and smiles — pure magic in motion!\r\n\r\nWe began our \"discovery rotation,\" where students explored each new manipulative at its own station. They experimented with connecting magnetic coins and bills, arranging number bonds, and using dominoes to build and discover fact families. This open exploration allowed them to make real-world connections and discover math through play — a huge shift for my students with Down syndrome, autism, and intellectual disabilities. For many of them, math has always been abstract or out of reach, but seeing and touching the numbers helped it click.\r\n\r\nNow, these manipulatives are a key part of our daily learning. In small groups and one-on-one lessons. The tools are helping students master essential skills, from counting and comparing numbers to building addition and subtraction fluency, all while aligning with their individual IEP goals. Each time they pick up a ten frame or link number bonds, I see confidence growing right alongside their growing understanding.\r\n\r\nYour generosity has transformed our classroom into a space where math feels possible, engaging, and fun. Thank you for believing in my students and giving them the opportunity to learn in a way that truly fits their needs. You have made a lasting impact on eight young learners who are now discovering that they can do math - and love it!","fullyFundedDate":1760020649585,"projectUrl":"project/making-math-concepts-click-with-hands-on/9737640/","projectTitle":"Making Math Concepts Click with Hands-On Tools for Special Learners","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Motichek","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10001385_orig.jpg?crop=2448,2448,x0,y130&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1745032039546","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10001385"},{"teacherId":10001385,"projectId":9263373,"letterContent":"When the boxes with our Donors Choose gifts were delivered to our classroom, my students were bursting with curiosity. They couldn't wait to open them, and once they saw what was inside, they wanted to touch and explore everything right away. That excitement has only grown as we've begun using the resources, especially during one-on-one lessons.\r\n\r\nEven students who aren't yet working on CVC words are asking to try the manipulatives. One fourth grade boy, who is only reading a handful of words so far, now asks me almost every single day, \"Am I going to read today?\" That question has become a beautiful reminder of why these resources matter — they are sparking confidence, motivation, and joy in children who are just beginning their reading journey.\r\n\r\nThe next step is to adjust reading goals so they reflect the skills now supported by these manipulatives, and to expand from one-on-one into small-group activities. My students are already making meaningful progress, and with your support, they now have the tools to build stronger beginnings than I could have provided on my own.","fullyFundedDate":1755725852013,"projectUrl":"project/building-strong-beginnings-for-emerging/9263373/","projectTitle":"Building Strong Beginnings for Emerging Readers in Special Education","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Motichek","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10001385_orig.jpg?crop=2448,2448,x0,y130&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1745032039546","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10001385"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_13811","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":386,"numTeachers":27,"percentFrplEligible":53,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":10,"percentWhite":80,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":1,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"3 - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"14.3:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":62.5,"schoolId":13811,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Purvis Upper Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Purvis Upper Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/mississippi/lamar-county-school-district/purvis-upper-elementary-school/13811"}
