What an unforgettable experience it was!\r\n\r\nMy students are curious, energetic, and full of imagination. They learn best when lessons are interactive, playful, and filled with excitement. Thanks to you, our classroom became a whole new world — complete with surgeon hats, masks, gowns, gloves, protective glasses, badges, and even a hospital backdrop. The moment they suited up, their eyes lit up. They weren't just students anymore — they were surgeons on an important mission.\r\n\r\nEach team received a \"patient\" (a nonfiction text) that needed urgent care. Labels were missing. Headings were unmarked. Captions and diagrams were waiting to be identified. Working together, students carefully examined their texts, used bandage stickers to label text features, and explained how each feature helps readers understand information.\r\n\r\nWhat made this lesson so powerful wasn't just the costumes or props — it was the confidence and collaboration that grew in the room. Students who are sometimes hesitant to speak up eagerly shared their findings. Teams discussed, debated, and celebrated each \"saved\" patient. They weren't just learning about nonfiction text features — they were experiencing them.\r\n\r\nWhen kids have fun learning, they remember it. This hands-on adventure strengthened their reading comprehension, built teamwork skills, and created a joyful connection to nonfiction texts that will stay with them far beyond second grade.\r\n\r\nBecause of you, reading became a heart-pounding, hands-on adventure. My students will always remember the day they became surgeons — and the joy of learning that came with it.\r\n\r\nThank you for making this experience possible and for investing in my students' excitement, creativity, and growth.","fullyFundedDate":1764723714381,"projectUrl":"project/operation-text-feature/9799494/","projectTitle":"Operation: Text Feature!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Angela","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp4127417_orig.jpg?crop=428,428,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1563756090634","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/aforbes"},{"teacherId":4127417,"projectId":9419329,"letterContent":"Rainy days and freezing temperatures don't slow us down anymore — thanks to you!\r\n\r\nMy second graders were so excited when these STEM resources arrived, they wanted to open and use them as soon as we opened the boxes. Students are designing, problem-solving, working together, and cheering each other on as they create.\r\n\r\nFor many of them, school is the best place to access hands-on materials like these. One moment that really stood out was when one of my students whispered, \"This is the best birthday I've ever had at school.\" Moments like these remind me just how powerful small acts of kindness can be. These celebrations help foster a sense of belonging and joy, which carry over into their learning and how they treat one another.\r\n\r\nAs we move through the rest of the school year, these birthday surprises will continue to be a bright spot for each child.
