My Pre-K students are so excited to explore new stories, and I am excited about the learning opportunities these books provide. In our classroom, books are more than just something we read—they are tools for building language, vocabulary, listening skills, comprehension, social-emotional skills, and early literacy. As we read together, I introduce students to new words, help them identify and name characters, settings, and objects, and ask questions that encourage them to think about and retell what they hear. We also practice making connections between the stories and our own experiences.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is interactive and engaging. We look at the pictures, point out letters and familiar words, make predictions, answer questions, act out parts of the story, and talk about what happened. My students especially enjoy choosing books, turning the pages, pointing to pictures, and joining in when they recognize repeated words or phrases. For my students receiving special education services, books are also a wonderful way to practice communication, follow directions, build attention, and build social skills in a fun, meaningful way.\r\n\r\nSome of my students have especially enjoyed the new books because they love looking at the colorful illustrations and connecting the stories to things they see and experience every day. Others are becoming more interested in sitting for longer periods of time and participating during story time. Seeing a child who may struggle to stay focused become excited about a book is incredibly rewarding. Your generosity is helping us create a classroom where every child can discover the joy of reading while building important skills that will support them throughout their educational journey.
