These lessons are often uncomfortable and embarrassing to talk about. It helped to give them something so positive afterwards.\r\n\r\n81% of our students come from low income backgrounds. Many have experienced or are experiencing homelessness. This is why it was important that we could offer each and every child a small hygiene kit. No child was singled out by getting one. Students also know safe adults they can ask when they need supplies at home. Extra supplies are stored in the event a child needs a product and their family cannot afford it.\r\n\r\nAfter receiving the hygiene products, I caught some smiles as kids put them away in their lockers. Over the course of the year, I was able to give yarn supplies and hooks to over 200 students! That is most of my school! Just about every morning before school, I put small balls of yarn that were a requested color in a student's locker for them to use and create with. Students figured out how to make hair scrunchies, jellyfish, wristlets, bags, and a really cool tail. Other kids were celebrating making a chain and starting to crochet into it. All progress was good progress.\r\n\r\nAt the end of the year, I celebrated the growth and building of this valuable coping skill with giving students the choice of whole skeins of yarn or full crochet hook sets! We were so excited to use these resources with our individual students and groups.\r\n\r\nI have especially loved using the 'Self-regulation workbook for kids' because it has great activities and coping strategies. The Joy Journal pages are excellent to use with kids to build resiliency. I also talk to students about the connection between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. The author explains every topic in a very kid-friendly way.\r\n\r\nI also love working with my intervention books. My students have varying needs. A behavior or academic intervention that worked for one student may not necessarily work for another. I turn to my 'Hatching tier 2 and tier 3 interventions in your elementary school counseling program' and my 'Social, emotional, and behavioral supports in schools' books often to find something helpful for my student. \r\n\r\nI have become a better counselor and educator with your support.
