Providing students with choices in their reading has been shown time and again to increase students' engagement and performance. Students are able to select a book that is not only at their level, but is high interest. By 6th grade, student reading levels and interests vary so much that it is difficult to find a single text that relates to each student in the class.\r\n\r\nThis project helped to update the animal section in our library. One of the best ways to get students reading is to find a high interest topic. Animal books are a highly requested resource in our library, particularly with our 6th grade students. In looking through our library last spring with students, we noticed that we needed more books with LGBTQ characters. They are able to come together in community with their peers, sharing their thoughts, connections, and experiences with the text in a way that they do not in other educational settings. In our classrooms, we offer students choice during their reading. This greatly improves student engagement but limits the experience of a shared text. \r\n\r\nWe have now had two meetings of our student led book club, with 20 students from different grades and learning communities participating. I have been incredibly impressed with the level of discourse happening at the meetings. Students are connecting with the texts and their peers in a way that simply doesn't happen on a daily basis in the classroom. We are looking forward to student led book clubs becoming a lasting tradition at our school. \r\n\r\nThe supplies to bedazzle their books have also been very engaging. Students are still in the process of creating unique works of art on their covers. One of our girls' groups is currently working on making matching shirts to build community in their group. Coming up next month, we are opening up shirt designing to students who are finished with their work early and want to learn a new skill. It's been checked out to complete class projects and also used as an incentive for students working with specialists. \r\n\r\nWe ended up with the perfect cart to store and move the supplies, and our high school student assistants helped us build it and get it ready. The Cricut Joy Extra has been a great addition to the cart and is easy for students and staff to learn to use. So far, the cart has been checked out to assist staff in creating displays, facilitate student sticker making projects, and for students to design and make their own shirts. We would not have had the full access to headphones that we now enjoy. We have used them for assessments. We have used them for daily work with digital libraries. We have even had times when we were able to use them for enjoying music during work or projects.\r\n \r\nWe have used headphones for \r\nassessments that have spoken directions, crucial for English language learners. This includes the ACCESS test, which is a yearly assessment of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The microphone feature and noice cancelling ear pads were perfect for this. Additionally, we use them for FAST testing, which monitors reading progress throughout the year. \r\n\r\nFor class work, we use them for read-to-me stories on the Epic app. Students can listen to books at any level, as well as short informational videos. \r\n\r\nStudents have been given the opportunity to use the headphone to listen to music while doing work. For some students this helps them focus or to block out environmental sounds.\r\n\r\nThank you for these high quality headphones. They have met a variety of needs in our classroom. The students were immediately drawn to them. I was surprised by how much excitement they generated. There was a lot of shared reading of books, talking, and showing. One student wanted to read about Ronaldo because her dad is a Renaldo fan and she wanted to go home and talk to him about it.\r\n\r\nAs a teacher, I am grateful to have some fresh books for second semester to keep the students motivated. I was able to order some higher level chapter books and students who were ready leveled up! One student told me, \"Hide this book so nobody else can take it.
