We have read some titles together, and students have selected to read others on their own or within a small group. Having these book titles in our classroom has allowed me to purposefully include these voices into our curriculum, and has provided my students with the opportunity to learn more about other people, broadening their understanding of others. I was excited to better prepare my students in reading aloud a picture book for older readers prior to an in person school assembly with a local elder sharing her perspective and cultural heritage growing up on the Fond Du Lac reservation.\r\n\r\nThe highlight of our learning thus far was the chance to have a zoom author visit with local Ojibwe author Anton Treuer after reading his young adult book Where Wolves Don't Die. Students were not only engaged in the modern coming of age story, but wanted to know more about Anton's personal experiences and how he came to write the book. \r\n\r\nI look forward to having multiple chances to continue this work later this spring when students will choose an indigenous author and investigate more about their work, reading two pieces of literature by the author.
