When my students first walked into the classroom and saw the new calming materials, their excitement and surprise were immediate. The resources were thoughtfully introduced as a gift specifically for them, which helped foster a strong sense of ownership and responsibility. Students quickly understood the importance of caring for the materials and appreciated that they were easily accessible whenever support was needed.\r\nThe impact of this project has been meaningful and evident in our classroom environment. The calming tools have provided students with comfort, joy, and a greater sense of emotional safety. As a result, student engagement and participation have noticeably increased. Students are learning to self-advocate by recognizing when they need to use these resources, allowing them to better regulate their emotions and fully engage in lessons. The materials support a slower, more manageable pace of learning, helping students avoid feeling overwhelmed and better supporting their individual needs.\r\nMoving forward, students will continue to incorporate these calming supports into daily classroom routines and ongoing lessons. These resources have become an essential part of promoting social-emotional growth while strengthening students' readiness to learn. This approach allows students to access content in a way that supports comprehension and participation, especially for those who find traditional reading challenging.\r\n\r\nStudents have responded most enthusiastically to Choices, which addresses teenage concerns such as health, finances, and self-expression. They actively listen, discuss, and reflect on how the topics relate to their own lives. Scope has also been well received; the teen-centered stories allow students to see themselves reflected in the content, fostering engagement and prompting thoughtful discussion about decision-making and social situations.\r\n\r\nIn contrast, Art magazine did not resonate as strongly. While visually appealing, students found the content less relatable to their experiences, resulting in lower engagement during these readings.\r\n\r\nThe \"My Authentic Self\" project will continue using these magazines for the remainder of the school year. This ongoing use will allow students to maintain and deepen their journal reflections, strengthening both their self-expression and critical thinking skills.
