On the very first day of class, students used the instruments in a college-level laboratory investigation of Beer's Law, exploring the relationship between the concentration of a solution and the amount of light it absorbs. Working at their own lab stations, students collected absorbance data and used it to investigate how light absorption can be used to determine the concentration of a solution. This gave students an immediate opportunity to connect chemistry concepts with quantitative laboratory techniques used in college science courses and research laboratories.\r\n\r\nStudents were surprised and excited to discover that each lab group had access to its own instrument. Rather than waiting for a demonstration or sharing one piece of equipment among the entire class, every group could collect and analyze its own data. The experience also challenged students to develop patience and troubleshoot technical difficulties as they connected the instruments to their Chromebooks. Interestingly, the instruments themselves were not the problem; maintaining a stable connection through the Chromebooks sometimes required persistence. These moments provided an opportunity for students to practice the problem-solving and perseverance that are essential to scientific work.\r\n\r\nNext, students will use the spectrophotometers to investigate reaction rates by measuring changes in solution absorbance over time. This will allow them to quantify how quickly reactants are consumed or products are formed during a chemical reaction. Throughout the course, students will build a laboratory notebook filled with their own experimental data, graphs, and analysis. By collecting and interpreting evidence themselves, they will develop the quantitative reasoning and scientific skills expected in college-level science courses. These resources are helping us bring authentic laboratory experiences into our high school classroom and prepare students for future study and careers in STEM fields.","fullyFundedDate":1783095133632,"projectUrl":"project/college-lab-experiences-without-leaving/10348548/","projectTitle":"College Lab Experiences Without Leaving High School","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Haack","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10536619_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1782481854775","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mrs-haack"},{"teacherId":10390541,"projectId":9970171,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous donation of calculators for my classroom.
