The items we were able to obtain for our Student Support Room have already proven to be incredibly beneficial in ways I did not even expect. Our district was blessed to be able to build a new PK-12 facility and the elementary school students started their year in this new space. It is beautiful and we have so many great new spaces and tools to explore and use across all space in the building. However, the Student Support Room holds special significance to the success of a small group of students on a daily basis. \r\n\r\nStudents who access this space on a regular basis do so for many different reasons. Some need a small and quieter space to work in. With the room dividers I have been able to create more privacy for students during daily work and testing. Other students need to move their body and take a break during long instructional periods. They are able to use the attached motor room along with things like our new balance beam and peanut ball. Those tools are used for intentional movement that helps their nervous system reset and prepares them to learn. Some students need to use small items like fidgets or building sets while they think about choices they have made or even to calm down after being too excited or even upset. The storage baskets and new sensory items have been a great tool to let students find things to take around the room, use, and easily clean up and find where to return it. They are learning skills that they will be able to adapt and use as they move forward through school and their adult life.\r\n\r\nFinally, some students come to school without basic needs being met. We have extra winter clothes, socks, hair care supplies, a variety of snacks, and more. Students have been able to get the items they need in a space where they don't feel any embarrassment or shame. No questions are asked but most students share what is going on and we are able to get resources to families that desperately need them. We firmly believe that no student can learn and be successful if they don't feel safe, cared for, and valued. We strive to provide that each day so these students know they matter. These tools have made such a meaningful difference for my busy-body kiddos.\r\n\r\nMany of my students have high energy levels or sensory needs that can sometimes make it difficult for them to focus or feel regulated during the day. Since introducing the weighted animals into our classroom routine, I've seen remarkable changes. These cuddly, calming companions have helped students feel more grounded during lessons, transitions, and even independent work time.\r\n\r\nIt's heartwarming to watch a child instinctively reach for a weighted animal when they're feeling overwhelmed or overstimulated—and then return to their work more centered and calm. These tools have truly become a quiet but powerful support system in our classroom.\r\n\r\nThank you again for helping create a more inclusive, supportive, and nurturing learning environment. The love when they come into the classroom and I have different ones every week setting on the table to learn. Sometimes as a teacher, we have the opportunity to sit with them and help them one on one because they are a bit too hard for some, but that also provides a perfect interaction between the adult and child to teach them and help them be successful in their learning. \r\n I will continue to provide puzzles for the children weekly, so these materials will be used the entire year throughout my class. The items we received have benefited students in many ways and will continue to do so as we move forward. First and foremost, some of the funded items were snacks for students who routinely go without during the day. There are students that come down daily to get food either because they forgot or their families cannot provide those extra items for them. We have a significant number of families who struggle financially so reducing the snack burden becomes a big assistance to these families and their children. \r\n\r\nThe remaining items have helped students regulate their emotions and their bodies so they could perform and learn better in the classroom. When they have a safe space where they can use tools to calm and focus, it positively impacts their overall success and their behavior in the classroom. The puzzles, fidgets, and games all give additional opportunities for sensory input, social skills practice, and practicing regulation strategies. I was also able to use many of the items in the class I teach throughout with the week in each grade level. Students were able to problem solve and follow directions as a group in order to complete a strategy and building game.\r\n\r\nIt means so much to receive local support for my mission of helping students manage and regulate themselves so they can be successful members of society, starting in their own classrooms.
