It was the first thing that children excitedly noticed upon walking in. Previously, the space lacked color and therefore did not engage the young minds that utilized the space. The area for reading time was the same as elsewhere in the room; bland dark utilitarian carpet. Although it is necessary in a school with a high amount of foot traffic, young minds should be offered more.\r\n\r\n A rug may seem simple and inconsequential to most, but as I have come to find out; It creates an anchor in the space. By anchor, I mean that it is a gathering place that naturally draws children to it and gives them a space that is undoubtedly \"theirs.\" For story times, students pick a leaf on the rug to sit on and are comfortable. This then eliminates environmental distractions, such as deciding on where to be, that can take away from their engagement in learning. Kindergarten and First grade students especially need a set space to be during instruction. Without this structure, social issues such as being in another's personal space, become an issue. The area rug eliminates those challenges.\r\n\r\n Most importantly, the children love it. They love the pattern and I have observed them making up games to play using the shapes and colors on the rug as a basis for the game. I have witnessed a creative take on the game Twister as well as their own version of yoga. It has been fun to watch how children will play and interact with their environment.","fullyFundedDate":1750163763973,"projectUrl":"project/reading-comfort/9332990/","projectTitle":"Reading Comfort","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Cooley","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-6_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10003090"},{"teacherId":10003090,"projectId":9263251,"letterContent":"Your generosity has already been put to good use. Daily use materials, such as pencils, guarantee that a student's inability to acquire these items themselves will not interfere with their education. For elementary students in kindergarten up through sixth grade, we often do hands-on crafts and activities in conjunction with our exploration into storytelling and literature. We recently learned how art is a medium for sharing stories and what a symbol can tell others. Our school mascot is a knight, and students were tasked with recreating the symbol in their own way. The construction paper and cardstock were used in this project, with some unique and fun results.\r\n\r\n The arrival of new books has been an exciting surprise for my students. Those that read books voraciously look forward to their next book to read and share. Our small town does not have a local library outside our school, making the school their only source for books. I appreciate the interest and curiosity your donation of books placed on their faces.\r\n\r\n Lastly, I want to express gratitude for the magnetic block sets. Schools serve a range of children with varied needs. Items that serve a dual purpose, such as these blocks, are put to use often in the classroom. For some of my students, overstimulation is a challenge in group settings and sometimes need redirection with something to do using their minds and their hands. Other times, we use Legos and magnetic blocks in order to reconstruct objects we read about, putting their imagination and critical thinking skills to use. The contributions afforded to our school through the successful funding of this project are so much appreciated. I feel gratitude each time I can utilize any of these items for all the children who attend my school. Thank you.","fullyFundedDate":1745773500627,"projectUrl":"project/creating-a-library-students-look-forward/9263251/","projectTitle":"Creating a Library Students Look Forward To","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Cooley","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-6_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10003090"},{"teacherId":5632789,"projectId":9156218,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generous support, we were able to purchase all the food, bedding, toys, and other supplies needed to welcome our new class pets! In April, we officially added two pet mice to our classroom, which the students voted to name \"Bluey\" and \"Bingo\". The students were so excited that they barely did anything other than watch the mice for the first day! \r\n\r\nThroughout the last month of the school year the students got to observe the mice in their new home and assist me in feeding and caring for them. We also created a maze out of a cardboard box and enjoyed watching them run through it to find their treats. The students especially enjoyed when the mice would roll around the classroom in their exercise balls.\r\n\r\nI loved watching the students show curiosity and interest in our new friends and was astounded at the care and compassion that they demonstrated. We also were able to share our new pets with many other students in the school as siblings stopped by in the mornings and brought their friends. As we reflected on the school year, many students exclaimed that creating and maintaining their \"Biome\" was the best activity of all. \r\n\r\nStudents took time to research which elements were necessary for a successful terrarium ecosystem. They were required to have at least three substrates, chose a plant, and could add living elements as well; isopods, garden snail, and springtails. We had learned about the water, carbon, and nitrogen cycles as well as energy pyramids. These concepts were reinforced when students saw condensation form inside the bowl, plants rooting and growing, and then snails eating bits of plant. Students had to decide how to maintain homeostasis by deciding on type of water and when and how much to add, how much ventilation to allow, and where to place their bowl in the room to get optimal light. We reflected on how our biomes in a bowl mimic the Earth and its systems and how those systems can be disrupted with pollution and nutrient imbalance.\r\n\r\nAt the end of the school year, students took their biomes in a bowl home and I very much look forward to hearing updates on how they develop. I've already had a couple of students share pictures of interesting organisms popping up; detritus worms and slugs.
