It tells the story of Odili, a young teacher in a small African country, who becomes involved in politics and is swept into a corrupt world of greed and power.\r\nThe novel is set in an unnamed fictional African country, and it provides a scathing critique of post-colonial African politics and the challenges faced by newly independent nations. The story is narrated by Odili, who initially supports Chief Nanga, a charismatic politician and former teacher, in his bid for re-election. However, as Odili becomes more involved in politics, he quickly realizes that Chief Nanga and his associates are deeply corrupt, using their positions of power for personal gain at the expense of the people they are supposed to serve.\r\nAs the story unfolds, Odili becomes disillusioned with Chief Nanga's hypocrisy and the widespread corruption that permeates the political system. He becomes embroiled in a struggle against the corrupt elite, attempting to expose their wrongdoing and stand up for the common people. Along the way, Odili faces various challenges and betrayals, including from people he once considered friends.\r\n\r\nI used Man of the People in AP Government to explore democratic values and dynamic leaders. \r\nIn our classroom we engage in reading several different ways. I read to students, they read independently and sometimes we read in small groups. \r\n\r\nFor Man of the people students read independently over the break . Many of my students are reluctant readers, but I was thanked by several of them for selecting this bood. They couldn't stop talking about it. \r\nAfter reading the book students worked in small groups to tackle different chapters of the book. They analyzed behavior in the chapter. They looked for examples of Democratic Values , they sketched scenes in the book. He held a socratic seminar to discuss the book and then students wrote a paper reflection paper . \r\n\r\n I liked the complexity of the book, with Odili's flaws and strengths being shown through his opinions of others. I loved the usage of culture and the clashes between the westernization and the effects of colonization in Africa with the already present culture and people. Personally, I was a bit disappointed in how women were mainly portrayed to be subservient to the men, with them rarely being able to speak out against the men in their lives. I wanted a deeper dive into them as they had interesting backstories. However, I do understand that this is a realistic reflection of how women were treated back then in Africa. \r\n \r\n\r\nMy reaction to the book was different compared to other books given to me by my teachers. I honestly thought it would be a book that we read over winter break, talked about for a day or 2 and dropped, But it was the opposite. I liked the fact that the poster and essay gave me time to really invest in the book. In terms of the book itself, It had plot twists like chief nanga taking edna from odili, which causes odili to run against. An even bigger plot twist was that neither won and a new government came to take control of the village. Overall, it was a huge plot twist and taught me to never judge a book by its cover.
