Having a large collection of diverse read-alouds allows me to introduce my students to characters, families, cultures, experiences, and perspectives that may be different from their own. We use these books to teach important reading skills such as making predictions, identifying the main idea and key details, making connections, asking and answering questions, inferring, and retelling. Just as importantly, the stories give us opportunities to have meaningful conversations about kindness, friendship, empathy, acceptance, perseverance, and celebrating what makes each person unique.\r\n\r\nReading aloud is a special part of our classroom each day. My students gather together, listen to a story, and then share their thinking with one another. The new books have helped make our read-aloud time even more engaging because there are so many stories that capture my students' interests and give them something meaningful to talk about. I have seen students become excited to choose books, make connections to the characters, and eagerly share their thoughts and questions during our discussions.\r\n\r\nThank you to our generous donors for helping build a classroom library filled with books that allow every student to see themselves represented while also learning about the world around them. Your generous donations have made such a wonderful impact on my first-grade students and our learning environment. The new books have given my students more opportunities to explore new stories, build their reading skills, and develop a love of reading. Our comfy floor cushions and bumpy/wiggle seats have also created flexible seating options that help students feel comfortable and ready to learn. Even the classroom essentials, like tape and the floor sweeper, have made a difference in keeping our classroom organized, clean, and ready for learning each day.\r\n\r\nWhen my students first saw the new materials, they were so excited to explore everything! They especially loved seeing the new books and getting to choose a comfortable spot to read. One of my favorite moments has been watching students settle into our reading area with a book and a cushion, completely engaged in their own story. These resources are helping us create a classroom where students feel excited, comfortable, and confident as learners.\r\n\r\nAs we continue through the school year, my students will be using these materials every day during independent reading, small-group instruction, and classroom activities. We are working on becoming stronger, more independent readers and learners, and these resources give us the tools and flexibility to make that happen.
