The calm corner has become an essential part of our daily routine, giving students a safe and welcoming space where they can pause, reflect, and regulate their emotions. Equipped with calming tools, visual supports, and comfortable seating, this space empowers students to take control of their feelings in a healthy and independent way. Alongside this, the new books have enriched our literacy time, providing students with meaningful stories that spark interest, imagination, and connection.\r\n\r\nWe use both the calm corner and books every day in a variety of ways. During independent reading time, students often choose books that interest them and sometimes bring them into the calm corner to read quietly while they reset. One especially powerful moment was when a student who often struggled with frustration chose to go to the calm corner with a book. Instead of reacting negatively, the student used the space to calm down, read for a few minutes, and then returned to the group ready to participate. Later, that same student shared their thoughts about the story with confidence. This moment showed not only growth in emotional regulation but also an increased willingness to engage academically. It is experiences like these that highlight how the combination of calming tools and engaging reading materials is making a real difference.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the calm corner materials and books, their excitement was immediate and genuine. Many were eager to explore the space, touch the materials, and ask questions about how they could use them. The books quickly captured their attention, with students excitedly flipping through pages and choosing stories that interested them. With clear guidance and modeling, students learned that the calm corner is a respectful space meant to help them feel safe and supported. Over time, they have taken ownership of both the space and the books, using them responsibly and purposefully. It has been wonderful to see students not only enjoy these resources but also understand their value.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, we are continuing to integrate both the calm corner and books into our daily lessons and classroom routines. Students are currently working on activities that encourage them to connect what they read to their own thoughts and emotions. They are learning to reflect on how characters handle challenges and to apply those strategies in their own lives. The calm corner plays a key role in this process by giving students a place to think, reset, and come back ready to learn. We also plan to expand student-led discussions and reflections, allowing them to share both their reading experiences and emotional growth with their peers.\r\n\r\nYour support has done more than provide materials—it has helped create a classroom environment where students feel safe, valued, and empowered. They are not only improving their reading skills but also developing self-awareness, resilience, and confidence. Because of you, our students are building strong minds and caring hearts every single day. Thank you for making such a lasting impact on our classroom.","fullyFundedDate":1766759828755,"projectUrl":"project/books-and-calm-corners-building-strong/9679840/","projectTitle":"Books and Calm Corners: Building Strong Minds and Hearts","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Baliscao","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10240443_orig.jpg?crop=1528,1528,x524,y432&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1756946948475","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10240443"},{"teacherId":8335682,"projectId":8634392,"letterContent":"I have received my rolling art easel and I am very thankful for your gesture. The moment my students saw the machine, their eyes lit up with excitement. They immediately began brainstorming projects, from personalized bookmarks to classroom décor and even custom stickers for our reading journals.\r\n\r\nOne standout moment was during our \"Identity & Empathy\" unit. Students used the Cricut to design symbolic name tags that reflected their personal stories—choosing colors, shapes, and words that represented who they are. It sparked meaningful conversations and gave each student a tangible way to express themselves.\r\n\r\nWe're now integrating the Cricut into our seasonal storytelling project. Students are designing visual elements for their myth-inspired journals, including layered paper cutouts, symbolic icons, and title page embellishments. The next step is to explore how design can deepen narrative meaning—blending literacy, art, and emotional expression.\r\n\r\nYour donation didn't just bring a tool into our classroom—it opened a gateway to creativity, confidence, and connection.
