With your support, my 7th grade students were able to choose which book written in verse they wanted to read for our Poetry Literature Circle Unit. Before the literature group unit started, we read and analyzed Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson. This introduced and gave students experience with novels written in verse. After reading Brown Girl Dreaming, we spent a class period introducing Rebound and Becoming Muhammad Ali. Students then chose which book they would prefer to read and from there I made their reading groups. Some student did research reports earlier in the year on Muhammad Ali, so they were excited to choose a book about him. While others were excited to read Rebound, since they read The Crossover last year. Students liked that they got to choose a book, and it was encouraging to see my students excited about reading in class. \r\n\r\nWithin the different lessons, students looked at overcoming obstacles and analyzed how they could overcome obstacles in their own life. Some also found that writing poetry is a strategy they can use to help them cope and deal with difficult emotions or situations in his or her life. I had one student who chose to write his own story of overcoming a difficult situation through writing in verse. Students were able to make connections, ask questions, and share their ideas with others in their group. Then we took time to share with the class as well. Students also wrote down different examples of the themes from each book on sticky notes and stuck them under theme headings around the classroom. Through this they saw others' ideas and how different books can have similar themes but are displayed in different ways. \r\n\r\nOverall, my students were very engaged with this unit. Some even realized that they do like poetry and books written in verse. When we went to the library, they went to the poetry section to find books similar to our Poetry Literature Circle Unit. Thank you again for your support and for helping my students grow as readers and writers.","fullyFundedDate":1766240808094,"projectUrl":"project/poetry-book-unit/9836292/","projectTitle":"Poetry Book Unit","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Wallace","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-7_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10315252"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_69031","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":261,"numTeachers":17,"percentFrplEligible":64,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":89,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":4,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"15.4:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_FRINGE"},"inStateSupporters":75.0,"schoolId":69031,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Napoleon Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Napoleon Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/michigan/napoleon-community-school-district/napoleon-middle-school/69031"}
