These books are full of examples of what each life skill, feeling or emotion looks like and sounds like. As we know, feelings and emotions look and feel do not always feel the same for every person. These books allow each child to feel connected and relate to it in a way that best fits them. These stories describe \"do's and don'ts\" and the very best part is, each book gives many strategies of how to grow their own spots in that area. Whether it's their little spot of kindness, responsibility, patience, happiness, anger, etc. We use the language and strategies from these books throughout our school days together and reflect on how we are growing or new ways we could grow further. The students are also learning about non-verbal cues on how to identify feelings and emotions within themselves and others. Also, actions and choices to that help build their life skill spots. The students love to provide ideas, suggestions or feedback on how they are doing individually and as a whole group. \r\n\r\nThese mini-lessons are used both as whole group learning opportunities and individually with specific student-focused goals. We have created anchor charts to set goals (pictured) to hang in the classroom as a great visual and reminder. The students can move their names based on how they are feeling or which goal they would like to set for themselves. We have also engaged in emotion activities using our plush emotion figures to allow each student an opportunity identify how they are feeling (pictured). These type of activities are used as a check-in and provide me with information on each student's social-emotional state and how I can best support them and also continue to build a strong and positive classroom community. \r\n\r\nFrom the bottom of my heart, I am extremely grateful for this gift for my students now and in the future.","fullyFundedDate":1727895672678,"projectUrl":"project/building-strong-social-emotional-skills/8791384/","projectTitle":"Building Strong Social-Emotional Skills 1 Book at a Time","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. VanBogelen","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7505695_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1720559167357","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7505695"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_70884","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":753,"numTeachers":51,"percentFrplEligible":70,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":3,"percentWhite":63,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":28,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"14.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"TOWN","ncesMetroType":"TOWN_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":85.9,"schoolId":70884,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Madison Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Madison Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/michigan/madison-school-district/madison-school/70884"}
