These books have come to a school with a high special education population. We have 7 special education classrooms within our school building, so for those students to be represented in the literature in our building is exceptional! Each book that was purchased for this school features a character with a disability including autism, visual impairment, hearing impairment, physical disability, ADHD, and more. These characters are represented in the book as children, items, or animals. The diverse representation helps to make these books accessible to all students in our school and make the concept of inclusion digestible. Another thing represented in these books is the use of alternative communication supports. As a speech-language pathologist, I love to see this representation. There are many forms of communication seen in these books, including high-tech communication devices, low tech communication boards, sign language, and mid tech recordable buttons. These communication tools are used by students in our school daily. Some of our device users will never encounter a communication device outside of the school setting, so seeing a student like them represented in literature is life changing. \r\n\r\nReading in our classrooms can look a lot of different ways. The first way is can look is the student flipping through a book that is sitting on the bookshelf. The kids enjoy looking at the photos and seeing the characters, even if they are unable to read the words. Our teachers often do whole group read alouds, as well. This allows all students to access the material, without the demand of independent reading being placed. For emerging readers, they may sit one on one with the teacher and read the book with support. This is a great way for us to work on our independent reading skills. We will often utilize technology to support reading as well. YouTube has a lot of read aloud videos, where the students can listen to the book while they follow along with the hard copy. \r\n\r\nMy students love books. Each week, during our speech lesson a book is highlighted. We read it together, utilizing a YouTube read aloud, the tangible book, and a target phrase that relates to the story. I have one student who always has to hold the book! He will run to me, when it is time, and ask for the book utilizing his communication supports. He then follows along as the read aloud is played and the target phrase is learned. He uses his finger to make sure he stays right on track. Thank you for helping to increase the inclusive literature within our school. You have helped to change the lives of our students and increase the inclusive representation that we have here.","fullyFundedDate":1764629335183,"projectUrl":"project/inclusive-books-for-all/9888872/","projectTitle":"Inclusive Books for All","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Beal","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-10_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10347798"},{"teacherId":10295312,"projectId":9779675,"letterContent":"The level of support provided by this program has had a major impact on my students. We are so grateful for your generous donation which provided us with snacks for the students. I have been able to have my snack drawer full for those students who may need a pick me up. Many of our students ride the bus for almost an hour to get home, some even longer. Our kindergarteners through second graders eat lunch at 10:30. Having extra hats, gloves, boots, and snow pants was just what we needed when kids forgot theirs or didn't have them. Seeing them share the items to make sure everyone was winter recess ready was great to see. Having a few dryers on hand was also amazing because my class plays hard and they needed to be dry before their next recess adventure. Now that the snow is gone we are still using the boots to keep our feet dry on those wet recess days.
