With the help of all of you I was able to widen the range of possible readings that students can choose between and it has sparked curiosity in both what novels are out there, but also more students are looking at the bookshelves in my room and asking questions. It has been fun discussing possible book choices with students and getting to know their quirks by how they react to the mini \"book trailer\" blurbs I wrote for each book. Lit Circles have groups of students participating in structured book clubs that combine pleasure reading with personalized discussion. \r\n\r\nIn this fast moving world where streaming and social media are wildly accessable, selection and specificiation are so important. In this installment of novels I was able to add several Latino authored books (I work at a school that is 90+% Latino) as well as four new novels that were written by women. Representation and experience is a great bridge to create lifelong readers, garner excitement for the craft, and develop the skill and stamina necessary to keep those readers going. Small success story - I had a student just finish reading one of the novels (He Who Fights With Monsters) and he told me it was the first full novel he had truly read the entirety of since he started High School. He broke his ankle the first week of school and was out for a bit, I told him it was on my favorites and I thought he would like it since he was a big video game guy. That's pretty cool, you don't always get that specific of stories to share.","fullyFundedDate":1773843484990,"projectUrl":"project/12th-ela-and-ap-literature-more-than-ju/10128376/","projectTitle":"12th ELA and AP Literature: More than Just the Classics!","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Valley","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9080786_orig.jpg?crop=835,835,x43,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1741806037533","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9080786"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_128215","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":390,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":5,"percentWhite":0,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":93,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":1,"gradesServed":"7 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":62.9,"schoolId":128215,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Southwest High School Academia Bilingue on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Southwest High School Academia Bilingue","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/michigan/grand-rapids-public-school-district/southwest-middle-high-school/128215"}
