With students reading 20 minutes a day, they will be exposed to 1.8 million words per year. A student who is only reading 1 minute a day is exposed to 8,000 words per year. How do we get students to keep reading 20 minutes a day? We give them good books!\r\n\r\nThe Happiest Man on Earth was written by Eddie Jaku, a Holocaust survivor. Although tragic, his story is one students can and will read to learn from his past and his chosen happiness. This book looks at all aspects of a Jewish victims experience during World War II. This is super important. Why? Because it helps teenagers understand how people were able to do horrific things to humans. It also shows how people were able to endure horrific actions. Through this, teenagers understand the value of human life. Even though they are only teenagers, they can make change happen: positive or negative. It is our goal for them to choose the positive! Our group holds meetings from October through the conclusion of the school year in June. The club is open to all 7th and 8th Grade students, a student body of nearly 425 students in total. We don't normally have 425 in attendance, the number fluctuates from 6-10 per meeting. When Book Club attendees heard our group was being funded they couldn't believe it! This is our second year of having a book club at our school, and I wanted to introduce a non-fiction title this year, so I chose the book Ugly, which we enjoyed, thanks to your generous gift. This wonderful book touches on a person finding his way in this world and how he overcame bullying. Once the book was finished being read, normally something attendees do outside of our one hour meetings, our follow-up meeting lead to our one of our most lively book discussion yet during our next meeting. Many students shared how even though they didn't have the physical limitations the author had struggled with throughout his life, they still could understand how bullying feels as many have experienced it. \r\n\r\nOur club meets twice a month, and we look forward to our next meeting and continued enjoyment of you most generous donation.","fullyFundedDate":1765396631972,"projectUrl":"project/page-turners-book-club-where-imaginat/9895957/","projectTitle":"Page Turners Book Club: Where Imagination Takes Flight!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Johnston","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-10_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10350679"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_71960","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":435,"numTeachers":25,"percentFrplEligible":74,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":92,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":2,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"7 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"17.4:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"TOWN","ncesMetroType":"TOWN_REMOTE"},"inStateSupporters":66.0,"schoolId":71960,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Gaylord Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Gaylord Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/michigan/gaylord-community-school-district/gaylord-middle-school/71960"}
