"Love That Dog" by Sharon Creech will show my students, especially the boys, that writing poetry is for everyone! Using this text to teach poetry will give students an example of how this genre can be used to share and process important life events and grow as writers by exploring an often intimidating writing style. Using a novel as a mentor text encourages reluctant writers to try something new! The story that unfolds in "Love That Dog" is one that my students will relate to while giving me the framework to build a unit that exposes all students to a variety of poem styles that will challenge them to become real life poets!
