The cushions were exactly what we needed to set the room up for everyone to have a designated comfortable space to take in some new information on how to using breathing to regulate emotions. Students learned mindfulness strategies and will continue building on this as the program expands and the word gets out that coming to school on Wednesday mornings for Mindful Morning is worth it! The kids are eager to learn skills that will help them manage difficult emotions during their school day and beyond. The calm strips were introduced and each participant left with their choice of one. I am so grateful to the Donor's Choose community and your generous donation for making this idea come to reality. I am eager to see more students learning skills that will truly benefit them for a lifetime. We have been able to use the new green screen daily. It is huge! It has made it much easier to film our announcements, and has also given the kids something to use for their personal projects.\r\n\r\nLikewise, the portable phone studios and microphones have increased student ability to make movies and news stories. The students have a much easier time either taking a portable studio or using their own device with these tools. We have increased both the volume and quality of our projects.\r\n\r\nThis means we have been able to have more students be the focus of our newscasts. Students are almost 100% in charge of the announcements with very little teacher input! This group of students thoroughly enjoyed the experience of tie-dying and making unique designs during our first phase of the project. The second phase of the project we were able to use a cricut and put personalized positivity messages on the unique designed shirts. We wore them on positive T-shirt, Tuesday, which is every Tuesday at our middle school. Our students were spreading kindness through their messages on their bright and fun shirts! I have a front row seat to watching a generation obsessed with technology. I simply wish I could change all of that overnight but in reality I can only introduce my students to other interests and hope they gravitate towards these when they have free time. This project allowed me to spend time introducing students to another thing they can enjoy using their hands, it can be done by themselves or when hanging out with friends. It can be done on the bus, on vacation, in class when there is free time or when they are bored at home. The possibilities are endless. What's more, they can use this skill to make gifts and personalize their clothing,. Students were taught the basics of embroidery and really enjoyed the challenge. Some caught right on but many were frustrated by their attempts to learn how to embroider. Some enjoyed ut so much they have asked to bring home a project and have even come back to show their class the progress or finished product. I am so proud of them for trying something new and hope the exposure to new ways to spend their time will translate into less screen time and more serene me time in their days, I have the option for this now on my classroom thanks to this donors choose project and your generous support of my project! A simple solution to a big problem experienced by far more students than we would like to see is now a reality! We can allow families to access the laundry room, offer to do laundry for a family, teach a student laundry 101 basics and empower them to do their laundry. It gives a student control over something when stability in their daily living situation is outside of their control. \r\nTruly this washer and dryer is magical, a difference maker in so many ways. It affords our staff an opportunity to offer help to a student and their family. In providing a way to come to school with clean clothes, dignity is given with the freshly laundered clothes. With a serene shade of blue on the walls, cloud cover tree lined skies covers over the bright fluorescent lights above the space, the smell of essential oils of the diffuser, soothing fairy lights all around, the live plants on the bamboo plant stand, the sounds of peaceful music coming from the portable speaker, the words of books with helpful ideas for stress management and mindfulness.... All of these things and more have helped make a space for students to reflect, regroup and recharge. When the day is tough, emotions are coming in waves and anxiety is cheating them out of concentrating and learning, a quick trip to the Zen Den is now a reality to bring them back to centered and ready to soak in the lessons in class. When lunch room noise is too much, students are escaping to the Zen Den. When life outside the walls of school has them feeling worried, sad, or stressed, a short retreat to the Zen Den offers a way to help in these difficult moments. It's a simple daily ritual made difficult for some of our students to achieve without the basic necessities for hygienic care. Being able to provide deodorant, toothpaste, shampoo, body wash, a loofa is like giving a hug in the form of a hygiene kit. \r\nHaving the items to resolve a student's basic needs is such a blessing and you've made that possible. Recently I had brothers who were coming to school smelling poorly, with dirt under their nails, greasy hair and sticking out for all the wrong reasons. I was able to put together a kit with one of all the hygiene necessities and a e talked about how often certain hygiene practices should be done. Since then the kids seem happier, are noticeably cleaner snd smell better! Other students are more willing to interact with them. This is the power of your generosity! What a blessing! \r\nWe often have special needs students with anxiety accident, a student having her period unexpectedly and just recently we needed underwear for a student who lost everything on a house fire.
